About the Item

Jan Frans van Bloemen The Horizon - H 100x83 cm, framed 113x98 Van Bloemen, the Flemish painter known as "L'Orizzonte," trained first in his native country and, after a stay in France, arrived in Italy with his brother Pieter. This painting, a typical example of Van Bloemen's art, is influenced by landscape artists such as Gaspard Dughet, Claude Lorrain, and Andrea Locatelli, his rival with whom he competed for the title of Rome's greatest painter of Arcadian landscape painting. The work depicts a biblical scene, but the true protagonist is the landscape, geographically located in Lazio. A truly idyllic scene whose depth highlights delicate, almost pastel-like hues, with light nuances, creating a luminous atmosphere. The orographic view, marked by a river, thus takes on a background perspective that evocatively marks the horizon. It's no coincidence that Van Bloemen was called "Orizzonte" by his contemporaries; some paintings were signed accordingly. The biblical scene is arranged at the bottom with darker colors and touches of light among the trees, except for the figures, which are rendered with a more vibrant palette, useful and functional to accentuate and highlight the anecdote. The work dates to the artist's full maturity between the first and second decades of the 18th century. Referenced Bibliography L. Salerno, Jan Frans Van Bloemen, "L'Orizzonte" e l'origine del paesaggio settecentesco, Rome 1974.
