Mountain Reflections "Ben Venue" by John Copland a Kirkcudbright Scotland painter (Scottish, 1854-1929). Painting of Loch Achray and Mt. Ben Venue in Scotland. Presented in a giltwood frame. Signed "J. Copland" and dated "1912" lower left. Titled "Ben Venue" on verso. Image size, 5.5"H x 9"W. Born in Urioch, Balmaghie, where his father was a farm manager and a neighbor of S R Crockett (Samuel Rutherford Crockett the Scottish novelist). He settled at the Studio, Dundrennan in 1887, shortly after his marriage in 1886 to Margaret Bennett of Fagra Mill, Rerrick, Kirkcudbright, Scotland. John was Scottish artist, photographer and illustrator and journalist, who had a strong affinity and love for Galloway. John studied at South Kensington and under Welsh landscape painter William W Gill. Also studied at Ludlow College, Royal Scottish Academy; Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. John Copland was most interested in mechanics and originally planned a career in marine engineering but his love of art won through. He traveled extensively throughout the British Isles before settling in Dundrennan; Dundrennan is a village in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, about five miles east of Kirkcudbright. John did 40 illustrations for school friend S. R. Crockett. He illustrated J Maxwell Wood's Smuggling in Galloway and Witchcraft in Galloway. When he settled in Dundrennan he photographed, painted and made illustrations of the people and places in the area. John was involved with the Kirkcudbright Artists' Colony.

River Tay Landscape Scotland - Scottish art Victorian Impressionist oil painting

A beautiful, large landscape painting, oil on panel, by Scottish listed artist Joseph Milne. The river is the Tay, one of his favourites to paint and the view is from the foot of the tower on Binn Hill with the Fife hills given a little more majesty. This painting is a typical Scottish Impressionist painting with vibrant brushwork. It was painted circa 1900 and is in very good condition in its original frame from W Stewart of Perth. It has various labels verso. Milne exhibited extensively at The Royal Scottish Academy and The Royal Academy. This is a lovely example of an early twentieth century Scottish oil. Signed left.
