Léo Gausson
Dans les champs - Neo Impressionist Riverscape Oil by Leo Marie Gausson

1890

About the Item

Signed and dated neo-impressionist landscape oil on canvas by French painter Leo Marie Gausson. Gausson painted this picturesque view of then fields above Triel-sur-Seine, a small town in the Île-de-France, in 1890 - he painted a similar view of the village from the opposite side in 1888 (see Christie's New York - 13th November 2021). This painting was executed in the period where Gausson was working with Maximilien Luce and Émile-Gustave Cavallo-Peduzzi - this trio of artists formed what has become known as the “Lagny group,” based between rural Lagny and Paris. From 1887, Gausson began showing his work at the Salon des Indépendants. From 1890, the artist moved towards a Symbolist style, embracing flattened colors and arabesque lines in his work - this painting is therefore probably one of his final works in his neo-impressionist period for which he is most cherished. Signature: Signed and dated 1890 lower left Dimensions: Framed: 22"x28.50" Unframed: 15"x21.5" Provenance: Musee Gatien-Bonet - "Exposition Leo Gausson" (Oct-Nov 1988) - No. 21 in exhibition catalogue Musée Pissarro, "Peintures Néo-Impressionnistes", August - September 1985 Léo Gausson began studying wood sculpture and then trained in engraving under Chauvel. He became a member of the Neo-Impressionists along with Signac, Maximilien Luce and Pissarro. At this period he received advice from Luce and Pissarro, who influenced his work. Around 1890 he moved in literary circles and associated particularly with Gustave Kahn and Adolphe Retté, whose poems he illustrated. He also played an active part in organising the first Lagny Salons. Later, in 1901, perhaps disheartened, he joined the civil service and was posted to Guinea. He painted in Brittany from 1910 to 1914. A genuinely talented colourist, he produced fine, picturesque engravings of reproductions copied after Millet's The Gleaners and First Steps. He also executed a medallion portrait of Millet. Around 1890 his style developed towards that of the Synthetists. From 1887 to 1895 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris; in 1892 he was invited with Luce, Pissarro and Toulouse-Lautrec to exhibit at the Groupe des Vingt exhibition in Brussels. His work has often been shown at exhibitions on the Neo-Impressionists: in 1968, Neo-impressionism at the Guggenheim Museum in New York; in 1978 at the Musée Maximilien-Luce, Mantes-la-Jolie; in 1985 at the Musée Camille-Pissarro, Pontoise; and in 1987-1988 at the Fondation Septentrion, Marcq-en-Barœul. During his life he showed his work in solo exhibitions: in 1896 at the Galerie Lafitte in Paris; in 1899 a retrospective at the Théâtre Antoine in Paris; and in 1988 at the Musée Municipal Gatien-Bonnet in Lagny-sur-Marne. Woman in Snow - Post Impressionist Oil, Figure in Landscape by Victor Charreton

Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Large signed landscape oil on canvas circa 1920 by sought after French post impressionist painter Victor Charreton, who was known as the painter of colours. The work depicts a woman walking through a snowy village in winter. The piece is beautifully coloured. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 33"x38" Unframed: 24"x29" Provenance: Private collection - Portugal Ader - Paris Charreton was a landscape artist in the Lyons tradition with a love of sensual impasto. In his works he seeks to capture fleeting, momentary effects, like those achieved by the Impressionists: effects at different times of day and in different seasons, such as dusk and snow. As a young man he painted the environs of Bourgoin. Skilled in capturing minute changes in the weather, he was also adept at capturing the spirit of new places. Beside his native Dauphiné and his adopted Auvergne, he was also charmed by the landscapes of the Île-de-France and Paris - Montmartre, the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Parc Montsouris...

"Parisian Street", Cityscape Oil on Canvas by Robert Farrington
Located in Pasadena, CA
This Robert Farrington's painting serves as a visual gateway to a distinct period in post-war France, composed with a deep respect for the elements interwoven into the collective memory of Paris. His work adeptly engages with the archetypal settings and concepts that convey the quintessence of this beloved and frequently visited capital. As the viewer gazes upon this artwork, they are instantly immersed in the ambiance of a food trade street, and especially the familiar historic brasserie “Au Pied de Cochon” - the sole establishment in the painting that still exists nowadays - and its surroundings at the heart of the bustling Halles district. At "6 Rue Coquillère", the act of opening the doors, each adorned with handles that resemble pig's trotters, transports one through a temporal gateway into the quintessential French world of "la cochonnaille"... The renowned "Pied de Cochon" restaurant made its debut in 1947. In its early days, it became the preferred gathering place for the "Forts des Halles" – the diligent laborers who tirelessly transported goods through the pavilions of the old Halles de Paris. From these dedicated workers to the luminaries of the time, this establishment emerged as a symbol of Parisian life. Farrington reconstructs a scene around this restaurant, nourished by her own Parisian experience when he was a young American living in France. An iconic Brigitte Bardot poster...
