This plein air oil painting depicts the uniqueness of Anacapa Island in the chain of Southern California’s Channel Islands archipelago. Anacapa was formed by volcanic eruptions. Its desolate landscape is dominated by a distinct geology of steep precipices and jagged rock formations. From this elevated viewpoint, Adams portrays the location known as Cathedral Cove with its outcropping spires and massive kelp beds that hug the shoreline. Ricardo Mulero is fascinated with capturing the brilliance of light and the contrast of natural beauty with utilitarian landscapes. Here, he focuses on the romantic glowing light of New York City's iconic Empire State Building in the nighttime sky. The viewer's eye is drawn up towards the beacon of soft yellow light that radiates through a misty grey-blue night sky. Dark rust colored skyscrapers elegantly frame the focal point is the distance while silhouettes of water towers make reference to old New York and windows aglow with electric light play on it's reputation of being the city that never sleeps. Mulero's brush work is subtle and captures the soft brilliance of electric light with a Romantic sensibility. The painting is currently unframed with aluminum stretcher bars. Born in London, England on March 27, 1870. When quite young Langley was abandoned by his parents in Australia. Making his way to Canada, he traveled alone by canoe down to the Gulf of Mexico. In Chicago he worked with Wm Selig in developing the motion picture camera and became a U.S. citizen in 1904. Before that he had played trumpet in the Illinois State Guard for many years. Sometime before 1917 he came to Hollywood, CA with Selig where they produced the pioneer epic, 'The Spoilers." A few years later Langley became art director for the Fairbanks Studio on such films as "Thief of Bagdad...
