A fine impressionist townscape oil painting by American artist Nancy Maybin Ferguson (1872-1967). Ferguson was born in Philadelphia, PA, and studied with academic realists Charles Hawthorne and William Merritt Chase at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. By the 1920s, Ferguson had gravitated toward the fauvist-inspired work of Arthur Carles and other modernists active at the Academy. She exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; National Academy of Design, New York City; Buffalo Fine Arts Museum, New York; and Philadelphia Men's Club, where she received a gold medal. She also exhibited her paintings from 1914 through 1945 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and in 1949 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. Over her career, she became best known for her plein-air paintings of colorful townscapes, street scenes and genre depictions of Provincetown, and Truro, Massachusetts. Nancy Maybin Ferguson
A native Philadelphian, Nancy Ferguson was a highly regarded member of The Philadelphia Ten. After graduating from Philadelphia High School for Girls, she embarked on a rewarding period of study, first at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women under Elliot Daingerfield, and then at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Chase, Breckenridge, Hawthorne, Carles and McCarter. She won an impressive five fellowships including the coveted Cresson Traveling Scholarship for travel abroad from the Academy in 1909. While her permanent residence was in Philadelphia, she fell in love with the picturesque village of Provincetown, Massachusetts, where her former teacher, Charles Hawthorne conducted a summer school. For most of her adult life, she divided her time between the two locations. She preferred to paint street scenes portraying a lot of activity. Her Philadelphia scenes of Rittenhouse Square and Fairmont Park are well known as are her many views in and around Provincetown. Ferguson’s earlier work is often compared to that of Maurice Prendergast. In fact, Dr. Albert Barnes purchased one of her works for his collection and used it for comparison to Prendergast in his art appreciation course. Today, it remains in the permanent collection of the Barnes Foundation. Her later works from the mid-1920s and 1930s take on a more Modernist style. These usually depict the tightly clustered architecture, winding roads and crowded harbors of Provincetown. In addition to exhibiting with The Philadelphia Ten (1923–27, 1930–38), Ferguson was invited to exhibit at many prestigious salons, including the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, the Woodmere Art Gallery, the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, the National Academy of Design, the Carnegie Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Paris Salon, among others.

Charles Henry Miller was a noted artist and painter of landscapes from Long Island, New York. The American poet Bayard Taylor called him, "The artistic discoverer of the little continent of Long Island."
Miller was educated at Mount Washington Collegiate Institute, and graduated in medicine at the New York Homeopathic Institute in 1864. Before his graduation, he had occasionally painted pictures, and in 1860 he exhibited The Challenge Accepted at the National Academy of Design, in New York City.

Nelson H. White was born in New London, Connecticut in 1932. White has been surrounded by art and artists from the time he was born. He received his earliest art instruction from his grandfather, Henry Cooke White (1861-1952) and his father Nelson Cooke White (1900-1989), both important American artists. The family lived in Waterford, Connecticut and the elder White had been an early member of the art colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Known for his paintings of the Connecticut landscape and shoreline, Henry Cooke White became a teacher to his son, Nelson Cooke White. Living with his parents at the Florence Griswold house in Old Lyme, he met some of the most important and influential artists of the day, Childe Hassam, Will Howe Foote and Harry Hoffman.
Later, Nelson White's father began to take his family to summer on Shelter Island and became friendly with many of the artists of the Peconic colony such as Irving Wiles, an important American impressionist. After graduating from the Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts in 1951, Nelson H. White began to study at Mitchell College in Connecticut but left to pursue studies in the violin, musical theory and composition. At this time, he began to spend more time studying art with his father and grandfather. By 1955, Nelson H. White had decided to devote himself to a career as a painter and traveled to Florence, Italy to become an apprentice to Pietro Annigoni, the world-renowned Florentine master. Within two years, the young White had won two awards for his work. While in Florence he also studied with the great Italian teacher, Nerina Simi. Today, White divides his time between the United States and Florence.
Although he has received instruction from some very important artists, White's work is highly individual. He paints with great spirit.
