About the Item
A colorful impressionist coastal oil painting of Provincetown by German / American artist Max Kuehne (1880-1968). Kuehne was born in Halle, Germany, and emigrated to Flushing, New York with his family during his adolescence. He studied under William Merritt Chase at his school in New York, as well as taking instruction from Kenneth Hayes Miller, and later Robert Henri. He then spent a year studying in Europe’s major art museums, returning to New York to maintain a studio of his own, developing his own impressionism style, and his work took on a brighter palette and greater simplicity. In later years, Kuehne’s landscapes and still lifes began to show the influence of Cezanne and Bonnard, and his style changed radically.
He exhibited his work at the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester, and in various New York City galleries. His works can now be found all over the world in various collections and museums.
