About the Item
A fine Italian coastal oil painting with boats titled “Venice at Dusk” by American artist Lucien Whiting Powell (1846-1930). Powell was born in Levinworth Manor, Virginia, joined the 11th Virginia Cavalry at 17 and fought in the Civil War, pursuing his art career after the war, studying with Thomas Moran in Philadelphia and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He is also said to have studied in New York City, probably with Moran who moved there in 1872. He was an admirer of British artist J. M. W. Turner’s work, traveling to England, as well as sketch trips to Venice, Rome, Paris and Switzerland. He was a member of the Society of Washington Artists and the Washington Water Color Club, and his works were exhibited from time to time in the Corcoran Gallery of Art and at the National Gallery. He is probably best known for his Turneresque views of Venice and the Grand Canyon.
Oil on canvas laid down on panel, signed lower left, and housed in a molded period giltwood frame, with minor edge losses. Dimensions: 23.25 in H x 37.5 in W, actual; 30.58 in H x 44.75 in W x D. Ref: 8
