Georgina Klitgaard (1893 – 1976) born in Spuyten Duyvil, New York in 1893, was a very successful painter, muralist and etcher who was friendly with artists Julian Bloch, George Biddle and Eugene Speicher. She studied at the National Academy of Design and Barnard College in New York City.
Klitgaard's work has a subtle folk art primitivism combining with expressiveness full of personal symbolism. In her tiny snowy landscape "Bearsville School, New York," only 8 by 10 inches, children play underneath a scraggly tree with the white schoolhouse seemingly startled behind it. The sky is very mystical, which could lead the viewer to believe they are not dealing with your average realist.
Klitgaard won awards from Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; the Pan American Exposition; and San Francisco Art Association, among others. She also received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1933.
She exhibited year after year at Carnegie Institute, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, and others. She painted Depression-era Works Projects Administration murals in post offices in Pelham, Georgia, and in New York in Goshen and Poughkeepsie, the latter a difficult, elongated composition of the town and Hudson River in 1840, based on a Barber and Howe woodcut.
Klitgard was a member of the Audubon Artists and American Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers. Her work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York City; Wood Gallery of Art, Montpelier, Vermont; Dayton Art Institute, Art Institute of Chicago and Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio.
Georgina Klitgaard died in 1976.

Georgina Klitgaard
Georgina Berrian was born in Spuyten Duyvil, New York in 1893. She was educated at Barnard College and studied at the National Academy of Design in New York. She married the Danish-born mariner, artist, and writer Kaj Klitgaard in 1919. After visiting friends in Woodstock, the couple became committed to the area and built a home in 1922 in Bearsville which provided a panoramic view of the mountains and valleys of Woodstock. Georgina Klitgaard's first exhibition in New York was held at the Whitney Studio Club from Dec.20, 1927 to January 7, 1928. Klitgaard's New York dealer was the Frank Rehn Galleries, where she began to exhibit in the 1930s, continuing that relationship into the 1950s. In 1939 and again in 1940 she had solo exhibitions with the Milch Gallery in New York. By the late 1920s, Klitgaard began to show works at museum invitationals. She sent work to the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania each year from 1928 to 1949. The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC invited Klitgaard to exhibit each year from 1930 to 1945. Klitgaard also exhibited works at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia from 1930 to 1945 annually. Klitgaard was also invited to exhibit regularly at the Whitney Museum of American Art from 1927 to 1944. In the 1936 works on paper component of the Whitney Biennial, Klitgaard exhibited Florida Landscape (No.116, a work on paper). In 1944 Klitgaard exhibited another Florida work, Early Spring, Florida (No. 7) at the Whitney. Based on this information, it seems likely that Klitgaard began to visit Florida in the winter during the 1930s and continued to do so until the 1940s. Many of her Woodstock artist friends, such as Doris Lee (1905-1983), found a way to spend time in Florida during the winter on a regular basis. Their experiences in Florida may have influenced Klitgaard to visit. In 1933 Georgina Klitgaard received a Guggenheim Fellowship which provided funds to travel in Europe. In 1940 the family traveled around the U.S. while Kaj, himself now the recipient of a Guggenheim, wrote Through the American Landscape. During the Depression she was selected to paint murals in post offices in Pelham, Georgia and Goshen (1937) and Poughkeepsie (1940) in Upstate New York. The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired Girl and Child Under A Pine Tree, a colorful portrait, in 1939. By the 1940s Klitgaard's work was also in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Newark Museum; the New Britain Museum of American Art; and the Dayton Art Institute, as well as other public and private collections. Klitgaard was a member of the Audubon Artists and the American Society of Painters, Sculptors, and Gravers. She had a studio in New York City located at 659 Fifth Avenue. Klitgaard died in 1976. The bulk of her exhibited subjects were painted around the Woodstock or Bearsville area.

Savage created the mural for the facade of the Communications Building. An image of the completed mural, along with a published postcard, is part of the listing. Note the center top female figure, she resembles the figure in the offered painting.
BIO
Eugene Francis Savage was born in Covington, Indiana 1883. He underwent various forms of art training in the early years. He was a pupil of The Corcoran Gallery and The Art Institute of Chicago, and was later awarded a fellowship to study in Rome at The American Academy.
While under the spell of that ancient city the young artist began to render historic figures that were suitable for the classic style needed for mural painting in the traditional manor. During this period he was able to study and observe Roman and Greek sculpture, although much of the academic training was accomplished by using plaster casts along with the incorporation of live models. This method survived and was used efficiently throughout Europe and the United States.
After leaving the Academy, Savage was commissioned to paint numerous murals throughout the United States and Europe. This artist received acclaim for the works he produced while under commissions from various sources. This young master was a contemporary of Mexican muralists David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896-1974), Jose Clemente Orozco (1883-1949) and Diego Rivera (1886-1957). In this period he was to show the influence of his contemporaries in formulating a modern style. Savage also played a vital role in the WPA Federal Art program, and he was a member of The Mural Art Guild..
Savage was elected an associate member of The National Academy of Design in 1924 and a full member in 1926. From 1947, he held a professorship at Yale University where he taught mural painting, and some of his students went on to significant positions.
By this time the artist had painted large-scale murals at Columbia, Yale University, Buffalo N.Y., Dallas, Texas, Chicago, Indiana, along with other commissioned works. He also achieved recognition for a series of murals commissioned by the Matson Shipping Line and completed around 1940. For this commission, Savage made many exacting studies of customs and folkways of the Hawaiian natives. However, the award-winning murals were not installed as planned but were put in storage during the war years when the ships were used for troop transportation and were in danger of attack.
However the mural images were reproduced and distributed by the shipping company including nine of the mural scenes that were made into lithographed menu covers in 1948. The American Institute of Graphic Arts awarded certificates of excellence for their graphic production, and the Smithsonian Institute exhibited the works in 1949. Today Savages' Hawaiian Art production is held in high regard by collectors of Hawaiian nostalgia.
In later years the artist focused his attention on a theme that dealt with the customs and tribal traditions of the Seminole Indians of Florida. He produced many variations of this theme throughout his lifetime, and the pictures were usually modest scale easel paintings, precise and carefully delineated. BIO
Michael Loew (1907 – 1985) was the son of a New York City baker. After high school, he was an apprentice to a stained-glass maker, and from 1926-1929, he studied at the Art Students League. In 1929, he traveled to Paris, North Africa, Germany, and Italy with a group of artists. When he returned to New York City in 1931, the Great Depression hit Loew unexpectedly, and for the next two years he paid his apartment rent with his paintings. In 1935, he found work with the WPA where he painted murals and partnered up with longtime friend Willem de Kooning in 1939 on a mural for the Hall of Pharmacy at the New York World’s Fair. "Winter" was originally purchased by Stanley Byer. Mr. Byer owned homes in Key West, New York City, and Washington, D.C. He purchased the painting from Dunning Auction in 1984 in Elgin, Illinois. Mr. Byer was related to Abraham Weiss from Florida. Saul Babbin, now deceased was a cousin of Mr. Weiss. I purchased the painting from Joy Babbin, Mr. Babbin's wife, now living in from New Mexico.
