19th Century Sussex landscape oil painting of a harvest
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Henry John Kinnaird British, (1861-1929) View near Cooksbridge, Sussex Oil on canvas, signed & further inscribed verso Image size: 15.5 inches x 23.5 inches Size including frame: 23 inches x 31 inches A pleasing landscape scene of a harvest near Cooksbridge, Sussex by Henry John Kinnaird. Figures are shown harvesting a crop in the foreground; whilst in the field beyond others stack sheaves onto a hay cart. A cottage and other buildings can be seen nestled amongst trees to the right. Cooksbridge is a village situated in the parish of Hamsey in Sussex a short distance from Lewes. It sits on the edge of the South Downs National Park, England’s newest national park which was designated in 2010. Henry John Kinnaird was a landscape artist born on 7 June, 1861 at Old Church, St Pancras in London. He was the eldest son of Francis Henry Kinnaird (1836-1916), who was an artist and his wife Charlotte née Lee. His brother Francis Joseph ‘Wiggs’ Kinnaird (1875-1915) also became an artist. Both were probably tutored by their father as their style and subject matter are similar, but Henry is also known to have taught his brother art. He spent his time on painting trips around the country and visited areas such as Buxton in Derbyshire where he met his future wife. He made his debut at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1880 from his parents address at 98 Brecknock Road, Islington with a work entitled ‘In the Green Woods, near Buxton’. By the time of his marriage to Alice Mary Leyland on 6 Feb, 1883 at Buxton he had established himself as a full time artist. The couple spent their early married life at 38 Leighton Road, Camden and had 2 children together. In 1886, he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy where he continued to show his work over the years. He moved to Chingford, Essex around 1887 where he was inspired by the views in his locality. Kinnaird painted in both oils and watercolours in a broad, naturalistic style similar to John Horace Hooper. Many of his works are of harvest scenes such as this fine example. After the death of his wife Alice in 1890, he married Mary Helen Cooke on 6 September, 1892. The couple went on to have 2 children. By 1901, he had relocated with his family to Worthing in Sussex where he lived at Rusholme on Homefield Road. After staying there for a few more years he moved to Elm Croft, Burpham, Arundel before moving to Ringmer near Lewes in Sussex. He spent the final years of his life living at The Old Cottage in Ringmer, where he died on 26 April, 1929. An example of his work is held by Chelmsford Museum. Presentation: The work is housed in a new English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

Nineteenth Century Winter Landscape in Pennsylvania by Thomas Birch
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Thomas Birch (American, born England, 1779-1851) Winter Landscape, Pennsylvania Oil on canvas, 18 x 24 inches FRAMED: 27 x 33 inches (approx.) Thomas Birch was born in Warwickshire, England, son of the enamel and miniature painter William Russell Birch (1755-1834). He and his father settled in Philadelphia in 1794 and produced popular sets of engravings that documented the city's growth such as The City of Philadelphia (1800) and Country Seats (1808). Thomas Birch began to paint portraits around 1806, and soon gravitated to the subjects that made him famous, landscapes, winter scenes, and marine scenes. Birch also painted numerous winter scenes throughout his career, perhaps influenced by the popularity of sleighing and skating in Philadelphia. His landscapes represented the more rustic tradition of English painting and although the subject matter was either the Pennsylvania of New Jersey countryside, Birch’s imagination was oriented toward seventeenth century Dutch painting as he was influenced by artists Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael. Birch frequently exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Artists’ Fund Society, formed in 1835. His art was influential in the later development of the Hudson River School of painting and the style of romantic realism...

Vista From West Campton, New Hampshire
By Frederick Williams
Located in Milford, NH
A fine New Hampshire landscape by American artist Frederick Dickinson Williams (1829–1915). Frederick Dickinson Williams was born into a patrician household in Boston, Massachusetts and attended the prestigious Boston Latin School before entering Harvard University in 1846. After graduation and until 1874, Williams taught drawing and painting in the Boston Public School System as a Professor of Drawing until 1874. Williams and his wife, the former Lucia M. Hunt, of Newburyport, relocated to Paris, France, where both studied the new French art and painted landscapes and genre scenes in their studio until 1888, when Lucia died in Paris. Williams returned to the United States and settled in Boston, opening a studio in late 1888. He continued to paint in the Boston area with regular trips to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and other wilderness areas where he produced a large body of French-inspired landscapes in the manner of Corot and other contemporary French painters. In 1904, a serious fire in his Boston studio destroyed all of his inventory, including a number of award-winning canvases from his Paris sojourn. Despite this significant loss, he continued to paint. During his long and successful career, Williams exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Washington DC Art...

Located in New York, NY
Painted by Historic Woman Artist Anna Freeland, "Gray's Inn, Iron Mountain and Wildcat River, Jackson, NH" depicts an autumn scene in the White Mountains. Painted in oil on canvas, the work measures 12 x 18 inches and is signed and dated 1891 at the lower left. The work is framed in a period appropriate frame and ready to hang. Anna C. Freeland (1837-1911) was born in New Hampshire to Mary Ann (Baker) and William Chamberlain. She received her education at the New Hampshire Conference Seminary and Female College in Tilton, New Hampshire. She studied art in Chicago under Walter Shirlaw, at the Académie Julian in Paris under Constant, and in Boston under William A. Rimmer and William M. Hunt.[1] An artist as well as a respected teacher, Freeland was a founder of the Worcester Art Students Club whose members included Joseph H. Greenwood and Frank J. Darrah. Incorporated in 1887, the club held meetings in the homes of its members. The club began holding meetings and exhibitions at the Worcester Art Museum following its opening in 1898.[2] Freeland offered instruction from her Worcester studio during the Winter months, and for over a decade, spent her summer working in her Jackson, New Hampshire studio.3 Her studio adjoined Gray’s Inn, a lodging establishment popular among artists. While busy executing figurative and floral works, as well as landscape and animal subjects, Freeland continued to teach. In 1886, she instructed a class of lady artists in Jackson.[4] In 1890, Freeland contributed several floral works as well as Portrait of Baby McClure, the infant daughter of an Art Students’ Club member, to the 10th annual exhibition of the club.[5] In 1902, Freeland was the instructor at an outdoor sketch class organized by the Newton Center Woman’s club.[6] In 1910, she exhibited with local artists including Joseph H. Greenwood at the Worcester Art Museum.[7] During her lifetime, Freeland exhibited locally and provided art instruction to notable artists including Walter Appleton Clark...
