Hannig, born in Hirschberg, Germany on 27 February 1883, came to America with his parents at the age of seven. He attended school in the southwest suburbs before the family settled in Chicago. Young Henry enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where Lawton Parker became his mentor. He made ends meet by working in industrial design and illustration.
By 1908 he was a pupil in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where students followed the traditional European drawing curriculum, beginning with the copying of master engravings and drawing after plaster casts, then concentrating on the nude figure. Thompson's formal education began at the Art Students League of Buffalo and continued in New York City, where he studied with prominent artists. His time in Europe was a turning point in his development as he immersed himself in both academic and modernist traditions, particularly influenced by the work of Cézanne. After settling in Colorado in 1914, he quickly made his mark on the local art community, infusing it with the avant-garde principles he had embraced abroad.
His mentorship extended to students of Polish heritage in Buffalo—Józef Bakoś, Alexander Korda, and Walter Mruk—who followed him to Denver after his move in 1917. Bakoś and Mruk would later become founding members of Los Cinco Pintores...

Born in San Francisco, CA on Sept. 5, 1871. Alice was the daughter of John C. Meussdorffer who made the finest hats on the West Coast during the 19th century.
A pupil of William Keith, she was most active as a painter at the turn of the century. During the latter part of her life she gained fame as a florist. Her prize-winning dahlia bulbs were shipped all over the world. She was also an ardent hiker and member of the Sierra Club. One of her dahlias was named "Kaweah" after the river in the Kings Canyon...
