Winter Sunlight - Realist Landscape Oil Painting by Ivan Fedorovich Choultse
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed and dated oil on canvas landscape by Russian Realist painter Ivan Fedorovich Choultse. This stunning piece depicts the winter sun shining down on a thick blanket of snow. The bare trees are creating blue shadows on the white snow and a stream runs through the landscape. The pale blue of the bright sky is just visible behind the trees. Signature: Signed lower left & dated 1921 Dimensions: Framed: 30"x35" Unframed: 21"x26" Provenance: Burlington Paintings - London (original labels verso) He was born in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, into a family of German origin (Schultze — original spelling of his family name – had lived in Russia since the 17th century). His first education was in electrical engineering. At the same time he tried to paint landscapes. When he was already thirty years old, he showed his first essays to a famous painter and member of Russian Academy of fine arts Constantin Jakovlevich Kryzhitsky (1858) —1911), who then invited Choultsé to study art. Other significant influences were Russian painter Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi (1841 —1910) and Swiss painter Alexander Calame (1810–1864). Together with Kryzhitsky in 1910 Choultsé travelled to Spitzbergen, where he painted many Arctic landscapes (Datskiy and Medvezhiy islands, Saint Magdalene's bay of the Spitzbergen archipelago etc.). After losing both of his teachers (Kuindzhi died in 1910 and Kryzhitsky committed suicide the year after) Choultsé begins to master his very own style of painting. Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna...

Edith Desternes, The Church Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in Auvers-sur-Oise, 1920s
Located in Saint Amans des cots, FR
Oil on canvas by Edith Desternes (1901-2000), France, 1920s. The Church Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in Auvers-sur-Oise. This church has been painted in 1890 by Vincent van Gogh. At first glance, one is struck by the strength of this work. Then, on examination, one is captivated by this depth of soul and technique. Edith Desternes uses a thick paint here where black, and dark colors, play a privileged role. Thus the contrast between the warm and cold tones, surrounded by black, create an intense luminosity reminiscent of stained glass windows from the Middle Ages. Georges Rouault is present in this powerful work. With frame : 87x66 cm - 34.25x26 inches ; without frame : 81x60 cm - 31.9x23.6 inches ; 25P Format. Signed "E. Desternes" lower right (see photo). On the back, we notice the pictorial material dropped by the artist, it is not a restoration. The condition is excellent ! Céline Édith Desternes was born in Paris on February 21, 1901. She was the daughter of Louis Desternes (1864-1936), professor at the Lycée...

"A Perkiomen October" Hand-Colored Photograph
Located in Soquel, CA
"A Perkiomen October" Hand-Colored Photograph Brightly oil paints colored black and white photograph of a pond by Wallace Nutting (American, 1861 - 1941). The viewer looks out across a glass pond, reflecting the scenery above. The pond is surrounded by trees that have been tinted in various shades of yellow, red, and green. Beyond the trees, puffy white clouds hang in a soft blue sky. Signed in the lower right, below the photograph, on the backing mat: Wallace Nutting Titled in the lower left, below the photograph, on the backing mat: A Perkiomen October Tag on verso from the artist. Presented in a wood frame with a tan backing mat. Frame size: 18.5"H x 22.5"W Image size: 10.5"H x 13"W Wallace Nutting (American, 1861-1941) was an American minister, photographer, artist, and antiquarian, who is most famous for his landscape photos of New England. He also was an accomplished author, lecturer, furniture maker, antiques expert and collector. His atmospheric photographs helped spur the Colonial Revival style. Nutting graduated from high school in Augusta, Maine. He studied at Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard University, Hartford Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary. He graduated from Harvard with the class of 1887. Nutting earned a Doctor of Divinity degree from Whitman College in 1893. He received an honorary doctor of Humanities from Washington & Jefferson College in 1938. Nutting began his career as a Congregational minister in several towns including Minneapolis, Seattle, and Providence and Fryeburg, Maine, but he was forced to retire at age 43 because of poor health. He suffered from neurasthenia, and turned to bicycling as a means of relaxation and improving his health. It was on these bicycle rides in the countryside that Nutting started taking photographs. In 1904 he opened the Wallace Nutting Art Prints Studio on East 23rd Street in New York. After a year he moved his business to a farm in Southbury, Connecticut. He called this place "Nuttinghame". In 1912 he moved the photography studio to Framingham, Massachusetts, in a home he called "Nuttingholme". That year he published a catalog of prints that was 97 pages and included about 900 images. By 1915, Nutting claimed to be earning $1,000 per day. Nutting's photographs ranged in subject and price to suit a variety of tastes. His catalog included pastoral scenes such as views of abbeys, cathedrals, bridges, mountains, flowers, and winding roads. One of his most common themes was "Colonials", which were photos of women...

Tiree Coastal Landscape Scotland - Scottish Impressionist Edwardian oil painting
Located in London, GB
This serene Scottish Impressionist Edwardian coastal landscape is by noted Scottish artist Joseph Morris Henderson. It was painted circa 1910 and entitled Tiree verso. Tiree is the most westerly island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland and one of the sunniest places in Scotland as well as midge fee due to the stiff breeze. Tiree is a very popular windsurfing venue and sometimes referred to as the Hawaii of the north. In most years, the Tiree World Classic surfing event is held here. The exact location of the painting is probably Vaul beach. Henderson has painted the view from one side of the large sweeping bay, so one looks across the beach to the opposite headland. His palette of light turquoise blues of the sea is just beautiful with the dramatic blusterly clouds above the sunny beach. The brushwork and impasto as just superb. This is a wonderful sunny Scottish coastal landscape and a superb example of Henderson's work. Signed lower right. Provenance. Signed and titled on T. & R. Annan & Sons, Ltd., Glasgow verso. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 24 inches by 18 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a frame that compliments the picture, 31 inches by 25 inches and also in excellent condition. Joseph Morris Henderson (1863-1936). Born in Glasgow, son of the artist Joseph Henderson by whom he was strongly influenced. Studied at Glasgow University and Glasgow School of Art. His style absorbed much from romantic Victorian realism and he dedicated himself to landscapes, seascapes and coastal scenes. He exhibited throughout his life primarily in Scotland. He was elected an Associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1928 and a full member in 1935. He exhibited there from 1890 for nearly fifty years, exhibited approximately 80 paintings.
