D. L. Murray
Impressionist Oil on Canvas, The Salmon Pool, Canonbie, Scotland

About the Item

Early 20th Century oil on canvas view of a salmon river by Miss D L Murray. The painting is signed bottom left and there is an artist's label with title to the frame. Presented in a fine gilt wood and plaster frame. A charming view of an iconic Scottish landscape, a salmon river running through green countryside. The scene is the Canonbie Beat on the Border Esk River. Famous for its salmon fishing Murray has captured the power of the river running through the bracken, gorse and undergrowth of the countryside. To the left a small cottage perhaps home to one of the gillies on the river. The artist has managed to create a painting with great movement and flow that moves the eye over the canvas. The Canonbie beat is situated on the Border Esk river in Scotland. This beat is popular among both local and visiting anglers. It boasts good holding pools, long runs, and is excellent for night fishing. The Canonbie beat covers much of the middle section of the Border Esk system. The river flows through picturesque countryside typical of the Border area, with wooded bankside areas featuring indigenous hardwoods. The Border Esk is generally fast-flowing, with beds of rock outcrop or pebble shingle and no natural weed growth. During periods of high water, the Esk may be regarded as “gin clear.” The salmon season opens from April 1st to October 31st, and both salmon and sea trout are caught here. Salmon weighing well into the teens of pounds and even twenty-pounders are taken every season. The sea trout season runs from April 1st to September 30th, with good runs of 2-3lb seatrout providing exhilarating sport. Night fishing for seatrout is a magical experience on the Border Esk.
