Hayley Lever
"Canal Locks, Devon, England" Oil on Canvas Impressionist Landscape Painting

1903

About the Item

An outstanding oil painting executed with thick use of paint capturing a luminous sight of the Locks at Devon England with the speckling water glistening down below. Homes from the village are depicted in the distance, and we can feel that a mood is set, as the sky a soft blue with puffed weighted clouds in the daylight. Overall, this painting glorifies the early 20th Century, while Lever was on his travels through Europe at the time of his career. A truly "Ahead of its time" piece as this impressionistic piece was executed in 1903, during the turn of the Century. With beautiful brushwork and strong contrasting colors, this is the finest work done with rich colors of cobalt blue, mars black and pops of bright whites and raw umbers throughout. Signed lower left with original plague placed bottom center and displayed in a wonderful carved frame from the period. Art measures 16 x 20 inches Frame measures 23.5 x 27.5 inches Richard Hayley Lever (1875-1958) was an Australian-American painter, etcher, lecturer, and art teacher. He studied under James Ashton at his Norwood art school and was a member of the Adelaide Easel Club before emigrating to New York and later settling in Massachusetts. Lever taught at the Art Students League of New York. He is recognized today as a significant figure in 20th century American Impressionism. His works are included in the White House collection, the Hirshhorn Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and many other distinguished collections. PROVENANCE: Lilac Gallery Collection acquired from the Property from an Important Private Collection, Denver, Colorado and it was previously sold at Bonhams, San Francisco, June 11, 2003, Lot 4064.
