About the Item

Peter Kurbatov (1907 – 1985), was a talented painter, graphic artist and writer. He lived a truly eventful life full of creative exploration. Despite the fact that this landscape was painted in 1951, during his stay in the USA, unobtrusive nuances of the Russian school of painting are discernible in it - the color scheme of the painting, the construction of composition and perspective. Oil paints are naneseny with confident brushstrokes on art paperboard. The subtly breathing edge of frosty air and perspective is adjacent to the restraint of the general mood of the landscape. Starting from realism and with his attention to detail, the painter fills the landscape with spontaneity and lightness. Vintage oil painting on paperboard, signed lower right, framed. Size app.: 53.5 x 65 cm (roughly 21.1 x 25.6 in), frame is 75.5 x 86.5 cm (roughly 29.7 x 34.1 in). Very good ready to hang condition, minor age and usage wear. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 3.7 kg is going to measure 6 kg packed for shipment. Kurbatov, in 1924-1929 he studied at the painting faculty of the Leningrad Higher Art and Technical Institute (Academy of Arts). He received the title of artist-painter for his thesis "Funeral of victims of the Civil War". According to the art critic V. Zavalishin in the newspaper "Russian Thought", in the late 1930s, the artist was arrested by the NKVD and sentenced to 10 years in a correctional labor camp. During the Great Patriotic War, he escaped from the camp and reached Sweden. According to other sources, he lived in Gatchina near St. Petersburg, and with the outbreak of the war, finding himself in the occupied territory, fled to Revel (now Tallinn), and from there to Stockholm. In Stockholm, he became famous as the author of realistic landscapes and salon portraits. He has held several solo exhibitions also in Paris. In the late 1940s he moved to the United States and settled in Miami Beach, Florida. He continued his artistic activities. In 1954 he held an exhibition of portraits in Washington. He wrote stories and poems and gave public readings.

Pink Sunset on River Winter Village Landscape early 20th century Oil Painting
Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower right "J. Purvit", presumably by Latvian artist Vilhelms Purvitis (1872 - 1945), but we do not claim. The tranquil, unfrozen river flowing on the outskirts of the village, situated on a hill in a picturesque location, whimsically reflects the houses and trees along the shore, adding an extra charm to the scene. The autumn leaves, not yet completely fallen, show bright colors peeking out from under a light blanket of snow covering the trees. In the distance, the mountain ranges add depth and dimension to the scene, while the green trees against the changing backdrop highlight the smooth transition of seasons. The winter sky with its cold hues and the fiery sunset casting beautiful pink shades across the all scene set the mood and create a captivating atmosphere. This painting once again reminds us of the beauty of nature that surrounds us... if only we find the time to pause and appreciate it. Antique oil painting on canvas, signed, unframed. Size app.: 50 x 69.5 cm (roughly 19.7 x 27.4 in). Overall in very good ready to hang condition with just minimal wear. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 2 kg is going to measure 4 kg packed for shipment. Vilhelms Purvitis, landscape painter and educator who founded the Latvian Academy of Art and was its rector from 1919 to 1934. Russian Modernist Сityscape Venetian Motive early 20th century Oil Painting
Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower left: Vasily (Wilhelm) Filippovich Levi (1878 - 1954). The uncommon view of Venice was depicted by gifted artist in even more modernism manner than his other works of same period. IMO this one worth special acceptance being very rare and highly desired masterwork. The scorching sun gilds the sparkling expanse of the canal with its rays. At this hour the city is empty. Calm waves gently lap against the keel of the gondola. The artist perfectly transferred to the canvas the atmospheric idyll and romantic magic of old Venice. Oil painting on wood, signed, framed. Size app.: 47 x 64 cm (roughly 18.5 x 25.2 in) and beautiful antique frame ca 64.5 x 81 cm (roughly 25.4 x 31.9 in). Very Good condition, ready to hang condition, age wear (just minor wear to frame finish). Please study good resolution images for overall cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 3.2 kg is going to measure some 5 kg packed for shipment. V. F. Levi - lawyer, collector, and also an artist. He spent his childhood in Riga, studied at the Alexander Gymnasium. He graduated from the 1st Kharkov Gymnasium (1899) and the Faculty of Law of Kharkov University. In 1916 he moved to Terijoki, built a house there and decided to devote himself to art. In 1918, on the advice of I. I. Brodsky, he showed his works to I. E. Repin and received his approval. After some time, he became Repin's confidant: during 1919-1930, he organized more than 50 Repin exhibitions in Helsinki, Prague, The Hague, Hamburg, Nice, Cannes and other European cities. In 1930-1939 he lived in Paris. In 1930 he participated in the Exhibition of Paintings by Russian Masters...

Pink Sunset in Winter Birch Forest Giant Landscape early 20 Сentury Oil Painting
Located in Stockholm, SE
An impressive painting in size and execution, a frosty winter day in a birch grove with a small pond. The orange-yellow sunset reflected on the surface of the pond creates the illusion of bizarre reflections. The frosty haze that has enveloped the forest intertwines with the approaching twilight, enhancing the sense of depth and atmosphere. On the right we see a traveler returning from the forest with an armful of brushwood on his back. In the distance a small flock of birds flies in, alarmed by something, bringing a sense of movement to this scene. The contrast of bright and cold shades creates an atmosphere of calm and silence...
