About the Item

Initialed lower right, 'R. S.' for Richard Schloss (American, born 1953) and dated 1982; additionally signed and dated, verso. A substantial and luminous landscape by this well-listed and exhibited Santa Barbara artist. Richard Schloss received his Master of Fine Arts in Painting at UCSB in 1979 with a BA in Italian in 1981. In 1980, he spent a year painting in Europe on an award-winning scholarship. In 1992, he was commissioned to paint the diorama for Cartwright Interactions Hall of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Following this, he received numerous commissions to create large artworks for public spaces, including for the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara Historical Museum and The Palo Alto Medical Foundation. In 2015, his work was the subject of a large, one-man show at the Ventura Museum of Art. The artist's work is held in the permanent collections of four California museums: the Santa Barbara Historical Society, the Ridley Tree Museum, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and the Ventura Museum of Art. Additionally, he has been a member of Santa Barbara's Oak Group since its inception in 1986.

A fine, early 20th century watercolor landscape showing the the luminous sunset serenely reflected in a still lake with elegant, calligraphic grasses. Painter, illustrator, etcher and muralist, Karl Yens was born in Germany and first studied with Max Koch in Berlin and, subsequently, with Benjamin-Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris. He was a successful active muralist in both Germany and Scotland before immigrating to the United States in 1901. After arriving in America, Yens continued to paint murals in New York City and Washington, D.C. before settling in Southern California where he lived and painted until his death in 1945. Ejnar Hansen studied at Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Art before moving to the United States in 1914 and settling in Pasadena in 1924. An ardent proponent of modernist color theory, Hansen became an influential teacher at the Chouinard School, the Otis Art Institute, the John Muir College, and the Pasadena School of Fine Arts. He exhibited widely and with success, including in Denmark and at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the 1939 World's Fair and at the Cincinnati Museum.
