Robert Kiener was born 1866 and raised in Bolligen, just outside Bern in Switzerland. He attended the Kunst Gewerbeschule in Bern and during his studies, being the talented young artist he was, he would earn an income designing ornamental ceramic tiles for fireplaces, fine furniture, illustrations and foremost he designed the famous ‘Bäremutz’ from Bern, a square Lebkuchen (Gingerbread) decorated with a passing Bear. It was also in those early days he began work on an important part of his life work; a collection of detailed depictions of anatomical, surgical, physiological and pathological subject matter, which he drew in collaboration with the Bernese surgeon Professor E. Th. Kocher (1841 - 1917). On recommendation by Bundesrat (Minister) Schenk he was able to continue his studies at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France. There he met his life long friends, the Bernes painters Rudolf Münger and Gustav von Steiger. He returned from France to Switzerland in 1889 and in 1890 he began teaching art at the drawing school in St. Imier (Zeichnungsschule St.Immer) in the Jura and in his free time he would create his first Jura Landscapes. In 1903 Kiener returned to Bern to work as an art teacher, but also found plenty of time to travel and spend some time in Italy and in 1912 the Kunstmuseum Bern put on a single artist exhibition in recognition of his work. Around 1926 , still painting, Kiener withdrew from public life and began to create highly accomplished animal studies, with the brush remaining firmly in his hand just up to a few days before his death in 1945. The oil painting is on a loose piece of canvas, which is backed with a board and securely held along the edges by the frame.
