The acclaimed artist Robert Pajer (-Gartegen) was born in Vienna on the 14th of June 1886, where he spent his youth. After finishing his law studies in 1912, having already created his first wood cut prints, he joined classes in a private Viennese art school and befriended Gustav Klimt and his entourage (‘Kunstschau’ artist group), Meredith Openheimer, Oskar Kokoschka. In 1922 he then joined the artist group known as the ‘Hagenbund’. Robert Pajer (-Gartegen) is well known for his wood cut prints and formostly mastered landscape painting, as well as the depiction of the human form. Throughout his life he continuously explored the new tastes of the time. Especially the colour palette he used when painting in oils his celebrated Donau river landscape paintings, comes very close to the tones used in emerging ‘Neue Sachlichkeit’ style. 1929 Robert Pajer (-Gartegen) was awarded the coveted Vienna’s ‘Kunstpreis’, confirming his status and he died relatively young in the war years on the 17th of February 1944 in his beloved Vienna. Verso there is what appears to be an Czech inscription, dated 15/XI/1924. Except for one tiny in-paint, the he painting is in an untouched 'as found' condition, with lvery ittle grime, some tiny minuscule scuffs and the for rough canvas usual pin holes - all non-offensive and commensurate with an age of just about a century.
