Lauded by critics and collectors alike, the art of Gary Ernest Smith resonates in the mind and memory of contemporary America. Over the past years the artist’s one-man shows have attracted the attention of collectors from coast to coast. His three year exhibit, “Journey I Search of Lost Images” hung in 22 museums and institutes across the United States. In an exhibit curated by the Brooklyn Museum of Art, his work toured the New Orleans Contemporary Art Center, San Jose Museum of Art, the Palm Springs Desert Museum and many more prestigious art institutions. Although he must strictly limit the number of commissions he accepts, his mural size paintings are highly prized by corporate collectors. Gary Ernest Smith was born and raised in a relatively isolated farm community 25 miles northeast of Baker City, Oregon. His interests and intensity for painting began at an early age and progressed through college degrees, numerous commissions and awards to a full time pursuit of painting. The commission work that dominated the early years eventually stifled his creativity. Dissatisfaction with this career direction forced him to reach inward and search beyond popular style and accepted artistic norms to a personal vision. Following years of artistic training and experimentation, subject matter began to emerge based on the artist’s background of a rural life-style that celebrates the values of hard work and self-reliance. These aspects of Smith’s life came together and became the catalyst for his distinctive style. Living in the west, his work is primarily of that region, but it is not western in the traditional sense. Although it defies precise classification, the artist considers his style “minimal” and seeks to express the essence and simplicity of each subject. Whatever the focus might be, his work expresses the artistic elements of bold form and color. Joseph Orr (Japanese, American, b. 1949) River Access Signed Lower Right 30 x 30 inches 39.5 x 39.5 inches with frame BORN in Tokyo, Japan, Oct 31,1949, Joseph lived his first years in an orphanage sponsored by American Armed Forces. He was adopted April,1954 and came to the US at age 5 where he became an American citizen. As the Orr’s traveled for the US military Joseph enjoyed a childhood rich in experiences from Germany and back to California where he attended High School and started College. Following his parents to Missouri In 1971 he took a job with Hallmark Cards as machine operator in the cardboard fold dept. It sparked an interest in art, so after a few months he sought out some of the Hallmark artists at their work for private lessons. He learned basic drawing and watercolor from Anthony Allison and, “Probably before I was ready”, he admits, Joseph was entering local art shows and even winning prizes. At that time Joseph also enrolled for art instruction under John Coleman at Longview Community College. He spent one semester there. By the end of 1972 Joseph had quit his day job to become a full time painter, joining an art show tour group called Word Of Art, which was a new concept: culture meets promotion. Booking weekly art exhibits in the new indoor shopping malls across America, The idea transformed part of the art world by bringing art to the masses. For Joe and many other artists in the early 1970’s, it created the chance to paint full time and sell their work to an otherwise unobtainable audience. During this time of continuous self study and painting Joseph transitioned from watercolor to the newer acrylic painting medium. Believing that acrylic, as a fine art painting medium, can be as viable as oil, Orr has always promoted it as the modern medium that it is. In 1990 Joseph, along with his wife, Rita and two other artists, founded the National Oil & Acrylic Painter’s Society. The Orr’s brainchild, they were aided in founding NOAPS organization by local art patrons, Wm & Martha Mitchell and fellow artists Pete Peterson and Dennis T. Yates. While traveling with the World of Art Tour Joseph had met Rita Mathews, an aspiring artist, in Columbia, MO. They were married in June 1974 and stayed in Missouri, traveling and exhibiting their art together. Orr had a brief encounter with printmaking in 1977. He took private instruction in stone lithography and copper plate etching from Frank Stack, professor of art at the Univ of MO, Columbia, but painting remained his principal devotion. By 1999 Joseph had become proficient enough to have obtained Gallery representation with several Fine Art Galleries across the US. Joseph Orr currently resides in Osage Beach, Missouri, but travels to paint and visit his gallery representatives and Exhibit Openings. PHILOSOPHY: For me the idea is that painting should follow some form of illustration and truth telling. Basically, the premise of my painting philosophy, is to build layers of narrative into my paintings. A place or landscape scene is never defined satisfactorily without it’s relationship to color and composition. It is important to balance fact with imagination. “ART REFLECTS THE SOUL OF SOCIETY. Wonderful modernist landscape painting. Francis Kelly was born in 1927 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He received his early education in Chicago and California. He served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1948 when he entered the Art Center School, Los Angeles. During 1951 in 1952 he lived in Paris, attending the Academie de la Grande, Chaumiere. In 1953 he went to the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, and then to the University of California at Los Angeles, where he was graphic laboratory assistant to John Paul Jones. Awarded a Fulbright Grant in 1955 he came to the Graphic Department of the Central School, London. The St. George's Gallery first introduced his etchings in Britain. In 1958 Kelly was awarded the Stacy Grant for painting. His work has been shown at Royal Academy Exhibitions and he has traveled extensively. In 1966 he was appointed Art organizer for the U.S. Embassy "Festival of Arts in Humanities". His paintings were shown in the exhibition "Five American Artists in Britain". During 1976 he acted in a similar capacity on behalf of Windsor & Newton Ltd., who sponsored an exhibition of American artists commemorating the U.S. Bicentennial. He appeared in the film Science in Art. Kelly has studied painting conservation at the Courtald Institute. In 1967 he was sent to the Italian Art and Archives Rescue Fund to Florence to restore flood damaged paintings. In 1971 his book, Art Restoration, was published by David and Charles and in the U.S. by McGraw-Hill. His second book, The Studio and The Artist was published in 1975. Kelly's work has been shown at 24 museums in Great Britain and numerous galleries. Acquisitions have been made by many public and private collections, universities and educational services. During more than 40 years in Britain he has found a growing affinity with the countryside, observing less the well-known landmarks but rather more the timeless rural lanes and by-ways as yet still unspoiled by building and industry. A member of the group in Brighton preserving Brighton's West Pier, he has produced a series of works recording the ravages of time on this finest of Victorian structures.
