About William Sanderson: William Sanderson was born Wilhelm Tsiegelnitsky in Latvia in 1905 and immigrated to the United States in 1923. A passionate and versatile artist, Sanderson studied at prestigious institutions like the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League, and later worked as an illustrator for major magazines and books during the early 20th century. His association with the New Masses and his early involvement with left-wing intellectuals shaped much of his early career, before he transitioned to fine arts after his service in WWII. Throughout his career, Sanderson’s works reflect his deep connection to both the cultural history of his homeland and the natural beauty of his adopted Colorado home. Moving to Colorado in 1942, Sanderson's post-war works began to include modernist depictions of the American West, often blending surrealism and stylized realism. His distinct approach to Colorado landscapes, especially through the lens of modernism, solidified his place as a notable figure in American art. In his later years, Sanderson became a respected educator at the University of Denver, where he taught from 1946 until his retirement in 1972. His legacy includes not only his expansive body of artwork but also his contributions to the development of contemporary art in Colorado. Sanderson's works have been featured in solo exhibitions at esteemed venues such as the Denver Art Museum and the A.C.A. Gallery in New York. His art is part of numerous prominent collections, including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and the Denver Art Museum. This evocative painting, "Abandoned (Colorado)," exemplifies Sanderson's mastery in capturing the raw beauty of the Colorado landscape while conveying a deeper sense of melancholy and reflection. Perfect for art collectors, enthusiasts of Western art, or those looking to own a piece of 20th-century American modernism, this painting offers a striking window into the evocative style of William Sanderson.
