About

EDUARDO LEÓN GARRIDO Spanish, 1856 - 1949 TAKING A REST BY THE RIVER signed "E. L. Garrido" (lower right) oil on wood panel 15-1/2 X 23-1/8 inches (42,5 X 58,5 cm.) framed: 23-3/4 X 31-3/4 (64 X 80,5 cm.) PROVENANCE Private French Collection Eduardo Leon Garrido was interested in gallant paintings, paying special attention to the female figure he painted with great delicacy and elegance. On this occasion, Leon Garrido paints his female model outdoors, instead of a Rococo interior as his usual compositions. This work brings us closer to the Plein-Air painting that artists of the French Barbizón School were doing. The female figure is touched with great sensuality and with great detail in her clothes and headdress, redeemed from a fresh landscape near a river with rich shades of greens Eduardo León Garrido (Madrid, 1856 - Caen, 1949) was a Spanish painter. He began his training at the Higher School of Painting in Madrid and as a disciple in Vicente Palmaroli's workshop. Thanks to a scholarship granted by the Diputación de Madrid, he traveled to Paris where he went to Raimundo de Madrazo's workshop. Later he traveled to Italy, contacting Venice with Spanish painters such as Mariano Fortuny and Martín Rico. In 1905 he was appointed professor of the School of Arts and Crafts of Varennes, remaining in France the rest of his life. His son Louis-Édouard Garrido was also a painter. His style is influenced by Impressionism and for some critics it resembles that of Manet. His work is mainly dedicated to traditional themes, portraits of elegant women dressed in Belle Époque clothes and the reproduction of gallant scenes. He achieved great success in his time and exhibited in Paris, London and Munich. Some of his paintings can be seen in the Prado Museum (Madrid), National Museum of Fine Arts (Argentina), Bilbao Fine Arts Museum and private collections such as the Bellver Collection in Seville, and others.
