Alphonse Legros was born on May 8, 1837 in Dijon, France. While young, Legros visited the farms of his relatives, and the peasants and landscapes of that part of France are the subjects of many of his works. He was sent to the art school at Dijon with a view to qualifying for a trade, and was apprenticed to an interior decorator. In 1851, Legros left for Paris, but passing through Lyon he worked for six months as journeyman muralist for painter/art restorer Jean-Baptiste Beuchot, who was painting the chapel of Cardinal Bonald in the cathedral.In Paris, Legros studied with theater scene painter Charles-Antoine. He attended also the drawing-school of Lecoq de Boisbaudran (the "Petite école") where he found made friends with Jules Dalou and Auguste Rodin. In 1855, he attended the evening classes of the École des Beaux Arts.Legros sent two portraits to the Paris Salon of 1857: one was rejected, and formed part of the exhibition of protest organized by Francois Bonvin in his studio; the other, which was accepted, was a profile portrait of his father. Art critic Champfleury saw the work in the Salon, and sought out the artist to enlist him in the "Realists," a group anchored by Gustave Courbet.Legros picked up the art of etching by watching a colleague in Paris who worked as a commercial engraver, and taught himself both etching and medallion making. He considered the traditional journey to Italy an important part of artistic training, and in later years, gave part of his salary to augment the income available for a travelling internship.He moved to England in 1863 and in 1864 married Frances Rosetta Hodgson. In his early career, he lived from the sales of his etchings and teaching. He is the son of actors and lives in Argentina until the age of nine years.
Once returned to Italy, he begins attending the Free School of the Nude and in 1914, he goes to Rome, where a year later he would study at Villa Strohl-Fern.
In 1917, he worked for the company, Ballets Russes by Diaghilev; he also collaborated with the scenography for Las Meninas and prepared the scenes for Les femmes de bonne humeur (The Good Humored Ladies) by Léon Bakst. During this period, he meets Picasso, whom he follows to Paris, collaborating with him on scenes from Parade. During his stay in Paris, he meets Derain and other exponents of the cultural environment.
With Picasso, he visited Barcelona and then Madrid where, together, they visited The Prado Museum.
In 1918, at the Casina Valadier on the Pincian Hill (Rome), he exhibits his Still Life with a Dish of Apples and Onions, which arouses perplexity in the Roman environment for his personal rare “neoclassicism” but at the same time, attentive to European situation in those years.

King's Messenger
The job of a King's Messenger was that of a diplomatic courier, hand-carrying important and secret documents around the world. Some say that the history of the sovereigns' messengers goes back to 1199, but the first known messenger was John Norman, who in 1485 earned 4d (1½ pence) per day for carrying the state papers of Richard III.
The silver greyhound on the messenger's badge dates back to Charles II. In 1660, during his exile at Breda, Netherlands, Charles II issued a declaration of amnesty to all those who had opposed him and his father. He used messengers to make his intentions known. In answer to the messenger's question "How will they know me?", Charles reached forward to a silver bowl on the table in front of him. This bowl, with four decorative greyhounds standing proud above the rim, was well known to all courtiers. Charles broke off a greyhound and gave it to the messenger as a guarantee that the message came from him. From that date, the King's Messenger always wore a silver greyhound around his neck.
Later, dating from George II or III, a badge with the Royal Arms in enamel, with the greyhound suspended beneath, was worn. A George III example of the King's Messenger Badge, pre 1800, sold for over £30,000 pounds some years ago.
The silver greyhounds were minted for each new reign, except the brief one of King Edward VIII. The sovereign's messengers were originally controlled by the Lord Chamberlain, being Messengers of the Great Chamber. When the Foreign Office was created in 1782, the messengers remained common to the three Secretaries of State.
