Nadezda's beautiful new oil on panel painting "Red Shoes" (2024) is a surrealist portrait of a young woman wearing a Russian dress, posed impossibly among a strange arrangement of objects at varying perspectives. Among these are living things like a spirit resting on the bed, and a small humanoid figure wearing a mask. Nadezda is a painter, sculptor, photographer, and concept artist. Her artwork is focused on narratives carefully gathered from the hidden chambers of her imagination as well as live theater-inspired work with actors, dancers, and models. Like a quilt stitched of poetic realities, Nadezda’s mysterious world defies the mundane. With a non-linear creative process flowing between different media, the artist explores various vantage points in her creations. This recently rediscovered portrait of Santi di Tito depicts a Florentine senator, with a letter in his hand indicating that the painting was executed in 1574 when the sitter was 66 years old. On the basis of these clues, it is tempting to view it as a portrait of Bartolomeo Panciatichi, who was painted some thirty years before by Bronzino (1503 - 1572). While the treatment of the hands recalls the Florentine tradition of Mannerist portraits, the comparison with Bronzino's portrait illustrates Santi di Tito's search for greater realism, despite the stereotyped composition. 1. Santi di Tito, Counter-Reformation painter and portraitist Santi di Tito was the great painter of the Florentine Counter-Reformation. He proposed a new artistic language that broke away from Mannerism. Little is known about his training in Florence (perhaps alongside Bronzino or Baccio Bandinelli), but this period of training enabled him to join the Company of Saint Luke, the guild of Florentine painters, in 1554. Between 1560 and 1564, Santi di Tito spent time in Rome, where he frequented the workshop of Taddeo Zuccari. This stay had a fundamental influence on his work, thanks to the discovery of the late work of Raphael, but also his encounters with the painters Francesco Salviati and Federico Barocci. Around 1565, Santi di Tito returned to Florence, where he remained until the end of his life, dividing his talents between the creation of important religious paintings and countless portraits. He became one of the city's leading painters, distinguishing himself, in particular, in the creation of large religious compositions in which the spirit of the Counter-Reformation was reflected. Hyneman (1849 - 1907) was born in 1849 to one of the most prominent Jewish families in Philadelphia. Unlike most Jewish families of the time, his embraced and encouraged his artistic talent. In 1874, Hyneman followed his first cousin Moses Ezekiel, National Academy member, to Europe to study. They first went to Germany and then to France where Hyneman began eight years of study with Leon Bonnat, the French Master. In Paris, the twenty-five year old Hyneman resided in a studio building at 75 Boulevard Clichy, with expatriates Frederic Arthur Bridgeman, Charles Sprague Pearce, Milne Ramsey, and Edwin Blashfield. Hyneman was clearly exposed to the works of these more experienced artists, as well as that of Walter Gay. In 1879, one of Hyneman's genre paintings, entitled "Desdemona", was accepted into the Paris Salon. Collection number 858 on verso. The apostle in half-length portrait, looking upwards. His shoulders are bare from his blue shirt, a brown cloak is draped over his arm. In his hand he holds the ‘keys to paradise’, which make him attributively recognisable. The bearded face shows the pleading remorse for his defamation of Christ described in the biblical account. The painting style immediately reveals Petrini's brushwork. The painter, who was born in Ticino, is one of the northern Italian-Lombard artists of the late Baroque period, who was possibly associated with Bartolomeo Guidobono (1654-1709) in Turin after 1700 and is documented with works in his home city between 1711 and 1753. Works by his hand were mainly found in the Como, Bergamo and Lugano areas. Other depictions of St Peter can be found in the church of Dubino and in a private collection in Montagnola. In 1991, an exhibition of his works was organised at the Villa Malpensata in Lugano, Switzerland. The painter was the son of a sculptor and, according to the sources, a pupil of the Genoese painter Bartolomeo Guidobono (1654-1709). However, he was also inspired by the works of Andrea Pozzo (1642-1709). Works by his hand can be found in several churches in Piedmont, such as San Maurizio in Pinerolo.
