About the artist: Over a career spanning half a century, Slim Aarons (1916–2006) captured the golden age of wealth, privilege, beauty, and leisure through his portrayal of high society, aristocracy, authors, artists, business icons, and celebrities. His work documented a world of elegance and ease that existed apart from the cultural and political upheavals of the latter twentieth century. Now, the Slim Aarons Estate has released a limited Estate edition as archival pigment prints, chosen for their exceptional sharpness, clarity, tonality, and quality, offering continuous color and tone true to Aarons’s vision. Aarons began his career as a combat photographer during World War II, earning a Purple Heart. Reflecting on that experience, he famously remarked that the only beach worth landing on was one adorned with beautiful people basking in the sun. This philosophy defined his signature aesthetic: casually glamorous scenes that continue to influence modern fashion, art, and celebrity photography. Aarons’s sunlit, escapist imagery has even been credited with shaping the flawless, carefree style seen in top Instagram influencers today. As one of the twentieth century's most prolific chroniclers of celebrity and socialite life, Aarons spent over six decades photographing the world’s most beautiful people in its most desirable locales. From Beverly Hills to Capri to the French Riviera, his subjects included icons like the Kennedy family, Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, and Grace Kelly. Aarons’s work became synonymous with luxury, inspiring fashion and advertising as the epitome of aspirational living. Though Aarons’ photographs could pass for a Vogue shoot, he worked without stylists or artificial lighting, preserving authenticity by capturing his subjects in their own clothes and natural settings.
