Frances Clark Nail was born in Memphis, Texas, in 1924. She was the youngest child and her nickname was Tootsie. She studied journalism and art at Texas Tech and would have earned her degree if she passed French. Nail worked at an airfield during World War II. After the war, she married Paul and they moved to Houston, Texas, after he finished his degree in 1948. Nail had two daughters.
