Herbert Bayer
Convolution, 1940s Modern Black White Abstract Lithograph of Kinetic Movement

1948

About the Item

"Convolution" is a striking 1948 lithograph on paper by renowned Austrian-American artist Herbert Bayer (1900-1985). This abstract kinetic artwork showcases Bayer’s mastery of form, presenting a dynamic visual representation of motion. The term “convolution” refers to a complex, winding shape or form, often resembling a spiral or intricate twist. In this work, Bayer captures the fluidity and energy of motion through bold, twisting patterns that evoke the natural and physical world in motion. The lithograph is framed using archival materials, with outer dimensions measuring 23 x 26 ¾ x 1 ¼ inches, and the image size measuring 17 x 22 inches. Herbert Bayer (1900-1985) was a pioneering Austrian-American artist whose six-decade career spanned multiple disciplines, including painting, sculpture, design, architecture, and photography. A key figure in the Bauhaus movement, Bayer was known for his innovative approach to modernism, blending art and industry. His work explored abstract forms, color, and geometry, reflecting the needs of the industrial age while embracing avant-garde trends. Bayer’s early life in Austria was shaped by his love of nature and the mountains. After studying design and typography in Europe, he joined the Bauhaus in 1921, where he became an influential teacher and designer. He later worked as a graphic designer in Berlin and New York before moving to Aspen, Colorado, in 1946. There, he helped transform the town into a cultural hub, designing architectural projects, public spaces, and exhibitions. Known for his series “Mountains and Convolutions,” Bayer’s lithographs and paintings often featured dynamic, twisting shapes symbolizing nature’s forces. His work in Aspen also included landmark designs for the Aspen Institute, where he merged art with the natural environment. Bayer’s legacy includes numerous awards and his work being held in prestigious museums like the Whitney Museum, Guggenheim Museum, and Museum of Modern Art. Bayer’s multifaceted career solidified him as one of the most influential modernist artists of the 20th century.
