About the Item

John Scott Martin Mariette Sails By Moonlight Unique Linocut Prints Linocut on Collage Image Size: H 20cm x W 20cm x D 0.3cm Mounted Size: H 34.5cm x W 34cm x D 0.3cm Sold Unframed Mariette Sails By Moonlight is a unique linocut print on collage by John Scott Martin. The bright colours of the sails and rustic use of line makes this a cheerful, grounding piece. Having cut a series of lino blocks, I prepare collage backgrounds. I handprint onto the collages, which are made up of coloured, textured and decorative papers. Each collage background is different, therefore each print is an original. The mood and dynamics of an individual print can be changed by the use of collage. The printed results are then mounted and or framed. John was born in Nottinghamshire, studying painting and graphic design at Nottingham College of Art in the 1960’s. He now lives in rural Warwickshire, just about as far from the sea as you can get. This doesn’t stop him from making frequent trips to the sea. In his paintings he likes his ships and boats to move and this effects how he gathers his reference material. His primary source being an extensive library of his own photographic images. This is added to whenever possible, often with no time for a sketch, but always with time for the camera to record.

He uses lushly colored and patterned images from all kinds of sources that bounce between abstraction and representation. Images come from tool catalogs, paper and fabric patterns, funhouse painting, architectural details, stripes, dots and squiggles. It is as if Burckhardt is a cartoonist merrily channeling Ellsworth Kelly, Paul Feeley, Robert Therrien, and Myron Stout, among others. Like Red Grooms, for whom he worked as an assistant, Burckhardt ransacks his influences yet ends up with something unmistakably his own. His work bears the influence of is a synthesis of many things: the tribal-influenced abstract painting of Steve Wheeler...
