Sean Scully (born 1945) is known for rich, painterly abstractions in which stripes or blocks of layered color are a prevailing motif. The delineated geometry of his work provides structure for an expressive, physical rendering of color, light, and texture. Scully's simplification of his compositions and use of repetitive forms--squares, rectangles, bands--echoes architectural motifs (doors, windows, walls) and in this way appeals to a universal understanding and temporal navigation of the picture plane. However, the intimacy of Scully's process, in which he layers and manipulates paint with varying brushstrokes and sensibilities, results in a highly sensual and tactile materiality. His colors and their interactions, often subtly harmonized, elicit profound emotional associations. Scully does not shy away from Romantic ideals and the potential for personal revelation. About Sean Scully:
Sean Scully is one of the most important painters of his generation, whose work is held in major museum collections around the world. While known primarily for his large-scale abstract paintings, comprised of vertical and horizontal bands, tessellating blocks and geometrical forms comprised of gradated and shifting colours, Scully also works in a variety of diverse media, including printmaking, sculpture, watercolour and pastel. Having developed a style over the past five decades that is uniquely his own, Scully has cemented his place in the history of painting. His work synthesises a thoroughly international collection of influences and personal perspectives – ranging from the legacy of American abstraction, with inspiration from the likes of Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock, and that of European tradition, with nods to Henri Matisse and Piet Mondrian, as well as references to classical Greek architecture. While monumental in scale and gesture, Scully’s work retains an undeniable delicacy and sincerity of emotion.
Sean Scully was born in Dublin in 1945 and raised in South London. Wanting to be an artist from an early age, Scully attended evening classes at the Central School of Art in London from 1962 to 1965, and enrolled full time at Croydon College of Art, London from 1965 until 1968. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Newcastle University in 1972. He was awarded the Frank Knox Fellowship to Harvard University in 1972, where he visited the United States for the first time. In 1975, he moved to New York full-time. Today, he lives and works between New York and Bavaria. With a career that spans more than five decades, he has received numerous accolades and has been the subject of multiple touring exhibitions. In 2014, he became the first Western artist to have a career-length retrospective in China. Follow the Heart: The Art of Sean Scully 1964 – 2014 included over 100 paintings and travelled from Shanghai to Beijing. Scully was named a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 2013 and has received honorary degrees from institutions such as the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston; the National University of Ireland, Dublin; Universitas Miguel Hernandez, Valencia; Burren College of Art, National University of Ireland; Newcastle University, UK, among others. A series of essays and conversations between Scully and the esteemed art critic Arthur Danto was published by Hatje Cantz in 2014, and a collection of Scully’s own writing, selected speeches and interviews, Inner, was released in 2016.

Born 1945, Dublin, Ireland; lives in New York City Born in Ireland in 1945, Sean Scully was raised and educated in London. In 1975, he moved to New York where he was immediately influenced by the geometric and color field painters working in that city: Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, and, especially, Mark Rothko. Abandoning the figurative work he was pursuing at the time, Scully began working with the deliberately reduced set of motifs that have occupied him for the last twenty years. Scully gathers his motifs from everyday experience; he looks at doors, windows, road maps, and uses photography “as a means of defining the parameters of his own visual world.” He does not depict the world but finds in the world visual experiences that correspond to his artistic mission. Specifically, Scully seeks to portray the richness of life through the relationships between the colors of his characteristically dark and understated palette. The reduction of formal elements to stripes and squares allows the color relationships to be of utmost importance. In the indefinite transition zones between colors, Scully exposes the “mystery of ambivalence and uncertainty” that permeates the human experience. Sean Scully is one of the most important contemporary artists working today, and his work can be seen in museums around the world including the Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth, Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Rhapsody'' is Bartlett's multi-part, multi-theme epic, a statement of the coming of age of an artist. A portable mural extended over 987 one-foot steel plates requiring 153 running feet of wall space, it is an enormous and infrequently mastered challenge to install and exhibit. In 1985-86, however, it will be on view in Minneapolis, Kansas City, Brooklyn, La Jolla, and Pittsburgh, and well worth a trip. In book form it becomes more available, with Smith's guided tour through sections, with Bartlett's notes giving conceptual coherence, and the opportunity to move from close-up to long view by turning a page. Rhapsody'' and this book afford a glimpse of a mind and art in action, a discovering and ordering process, an exciting demonstration of ways of growing and expressing the self and the world. Highly recommended.

By the mid-1970s, Jennifer Bartlett (1941-2022, b. Long Beach, California) had emerged as a leading American artist of her time—particularly following the landmark presentation at Paula Cooper Gallery of Rhapsody (1976), Bartlett’s magnum opus, now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Bartlett’s first survey exhibition was held in 1985 at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and traveled to the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Philadelphia, among others. In 2006, the Addison Gallery of American Art surveyed Bartlett’s early enameled steel plate paintings in the period from 1968–76. In 2013-14, Klaus Ottmann curated her second traveling survey, which visited the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Parrish Art Museum, New York. Presented in a black folio with title sheet, table of contents, and ties. Includes protective tissue paper dividers between each piece.
Each piece is numbered, titled, and signed by the artist.
Patricia Pearce is a California artist who attended San Francisco State and UC Irvine and is the adjunct Professor of Fine Art at the College of San Mateo. Her early work on paper explored images of garments using various printmaking techniques. Later, she began to work mainly in collagraph and monotype prints creating singular images of kimonos and ribbons in her subtle shifting, subdued pieces are constructed in a three-step process. Awards include Grade Prize, 3rd Biennial Exhibition of Prints, Wakayama Japan; Grant, Peninsula Community Foundation. Collections: Nieman Marcus, San Francisco; Wells Fargo, San Francisco Exhibitions: Montalvo, California Center for the Arts; Pacific Prints, Palo Alto.

Judith Gaulke (American, b. 1946) is originally from Hood River, Oregon. Gaulke has been working in oils on canvas most of her life, painting seriously since 1988 when she had her first showing, then her first gallery representation in 1990. She is attracted to lone objects and scenes not yet populated — table settings, chairs, boats — all interpreted to give the viewer a sense of calm. Gaulke now resides in Atherton, California with her husband Michael. Together they created the Michael and Judith Gaulke Chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University, an endowment for the College of Engineering.
