Grus Cinerea (Common Crane) /// John Gould Ornithology Bird Animal Lithograph
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
Artist: John Gould (English, 1804-1881) Title: "Grus Cinerea (Common Crane)" (Vol. 4, Plate 19) Portfolio: The Birds of Great Britain Year: 1862-1873 Medium: Original Hand-Colored Lithograph on wove paper Limited edition: approx. 750 Printer: Walter or Walter & Cohn, London, UK Publisher: Taylor and Francis, John Gould, London, UK Reference: Sauer No. 23; Ayer/Zimmer page 261; Wood page 365; Nissen No. IVB 372; Sitwell page 78 Sheet size: 14.75" x 21.57" Image size: 12.75" x 20.13" Condition: Has been professionally stored away for decades. In excellent condition with strong colors Notes: Provenance: private collection - Aspen, CO. Lithography and hand-coloring by German artist Joseph Wolf (1820-1899) and Irish artist William Hart (1830-1908). Comes from Gould's five volume "The Birds of Great Britain", (1862-1873) (First edition), which consists of 367 hand-colored lithographs. Other contributing lithographers were John Gould and English artist Henry Constantine Richter (1821-1902). "The Birds of Great Britain" is recognized as Gould's greatest work. Gold gilded edges as issued. The common crane, also known as the Eurasian crane, is a bird of the family Gruidae, the cranes. A medium-sized species, it is the only crane commonly found in Europe besides the demoiselle crane and the Siberian crane that only are regular in the far eastern part of the continent. Biography: John Gould FRS (14 September 1804 – 3 February 1881) was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published a number of monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. He has been considered the father of bird study in Australia and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed "Darwin's finches" played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, "On the Origin of Species".

"Reigning and Roosting" Folk Art inspired linoleum block bird print, deep blue
Located in Wellesley, MA
Lisa Houck is a highly established artist from Boston, recently re-located to Maine, with a very large following devoted to her exceptional paintings, watercolors, mosaics and prints reminiscent of Folk Art, Matisse and Aborigine art. Houck is widely admired and recognized for a gorgeous sense of color and a sensibility both playful and serious that is uniquely her own. This is one of her 3 most recent large format bird prints in various shades of blue and aqua in a series which now consists of a total of 10 related prints. They are outstanding installed individually or as groups. Houck's highly sophisticated and complex sense of pattern and design is delightfully whimsical, as well as extraordinarily compelling for its knowledge of so many artistic forms which the artist is miraculously able to reference and incorporate, while maintaining a style so distinctively recognizable as her own. Lisa Houck "Flittering and Fluttering" 2023 Linoleum Block Print Edition 10 35.25 x 23.25 Inches This print is not framed. Lisa Houck has an outstanding reputation for not only her work as a printmaker but for achievements in painting, watercolor, mosaic and textiles as well. She has executed many large permanent public art commissions for interior and exterior sites in Boston and nationwide including ambitious murals for Dana Farber, The Children's Hospital, Frieda Garcia Park and numerous libraries, playgrounds and other public buildings. Her works have been featured in many museum and gallery exhibitions and are included in a multitude of public and private collections. Artist's Statement: "I work in watercolor, oil on wood, ceramics, mosaics and etching. Each medium allows me to invent new ways to express my view of nature through color and pattern. My artwork has been exhibited widely, and is in numerous public and private collections, including The Boston Athenaeum, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, Fidelity Investments, four libraries in Broward County Florida, Hale and Dorr, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston." Helen Fay, What’s That?, Penguin Art, Affordable Art, Limited Edition Print
Located in Deddington, GB
What’s That? by Helen Fay [2012] Limited Edition Etching , hand printed on Hanemulle etching paper Edition number edition size 75 Image size: H:21 cm x W:18 cm Complete Size of Unframed Work: H:45 cm x W:30 cm x D:.15cm Sold Unframed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look Original Print, hand made and hand printed by the artist. A gentoo penguin, standing wings out, her attention just grabbed by something. The light is just catching her soft chest feathers. The etching captures the tactile softness of the feathers. Animals have always been at the heart of my work. I find the form, movement and behaviour of the creatures I draw a source of limitless fascination. I love the idea of them watching me, watching them as I draw. I hope my appreciation of the sentience and character of the animals I draw comes across in my work. Over my career I have drawn everything from primates to penguins, dogs, ostriches and even an echidna. These days dogs are my main focus, mostly because I adore dogs but also because they are such an integral part of life. I am delighted by the theory that humans and dogs co evolved, we wouldn’t be what we are without them and vice versa. I try to pare my images down to a balanced simplicity that directs attention to the subject of the picture. I try to balance the subject and the space it occupies, giving each equal importance. Light is hugely important to my work, I imagine my subject in three dimensions as I draw and the light describes the musculature and texture that gives the drawing it’s presence and grounds it in the picture. I aim to capture a pause, a moment where whatever I draw looks like it could wander off or leap up any minute. My influences include Japanese prints, Chinese and Japanese brush drawing and the European artists who were influenced by Japan. I am really excited by composition, by artists like Bonnard and Leon Spilliaert...

I am really excited by composition, by artists like Bonnard and Leon Spilliaert. I have long been a fan of Munch for his direct markmaking, colour and intensity and at the other end of the spectrum, Hammershoi for his limited palette, sense of space and calm. I am interested in black and white photography and film and have recently discovered and been amazed by the films of Yasujiro Ozu. The photographs of Andrei Tarkovsky are favourites too. Lastly, I would like to namecheck a great influence in natural history illustration...
