Keith Haring
Keith Haring began experimenting with his bold, graphic lines and cartoon-inspired figures on the walls of New York City subway stations in the early 1980s. He called them his “laboratory,” places to develop a radical new aesthetic based on an ideology of creating truly democratic public art.
Haring’s paintings, prints and murals address the universal themes of death, love and sex, as well as contemporary issues he experienced personally, like the crack-cocaine and AIDS epidemics. They derive much of their impact from the powerful contrast between these serious subjects and the joyful, vibrant pictographic language he uses to express them, full of dancing figures, babies, barking dogs, hearts and rhythmic lines, as well as references to pop culture.
To make his art even more accessible, in 1986, Haring opened the Pop Shop in Soho. In a foreshadowing of today’s intermingling of art and fashion, the shop sold merchandise and novelty items featuring imagery by Haring and contemporaries like Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. While his works sometimes included text, for the most part, he chose to communicate through drawing.
“Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times,” Haring once declared. “It lives through magic.”

- Keith Haring Crack Down! (Keith Haring 1986)By Keith HaringLocated in NEW YORK, NYKeith Haring Crack Down! 1986: Vintage original Keith Haring anti-drug poster, 1986. Off-set lithograph on heavy weight paper. Dimensions: 17 x 22 inches. Minor signs of handling; otherwise excellent condition; well-preserved, crisp colors. 1st edition. 1st printing, 1986. Authenticity guaranteed. Literature/Catalog Raisonne: Döring, Jürgen and Claus von der Osten. "Keith Haring - Posters" (Hamburg: Prestel, 2017), entry 47, p. 114. Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist known for his illustrative depictions of figures and symbols. His white chalk drawings could often been found on the blank poster marquees in New York’s public spaces and subways. “I don't think art is propaganda,” he once stated. “It should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.” Born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, PA, he grew up in neighboring Kutztown, where he was inspired to draw from an early age by Walt Disney cartoons and his father who was an amateur cartoonist. After briefly studying commercial art in Pittsburgh, Haring came across a show of the works of Pierre Alechinksy and decided to pursue a career in fine art instead. He moved to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, and soon immersed himself in the city’s graffiti culture. By the mid-1980s, he had befriended fellow artists Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities like the singer Grace Jones. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring’s prodigious career was brief, and he died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990 at the age of 31. Before his death, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, a non-profit committed to raising awareness of the illness through art programing and community outreach. Throughout his career, Haring made his art widely available through the location of his murals, as well as through the Pop Shop—Haring's own storefront which he used to sell his memorabilia. The artist’s mural Crack is Wack (1986), can still be seen today on a retaining wall along FDR Drive in Manhattan. Haring’s works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. - Hiroshima Peace Celebration (Hand Signed), from the Patrick Eddington CollectionBy Keith HaringLocated in New York, NYKeith Haring Hiroshima Peace Celebration (Hand Signed), from the Patrick Eddington Collection, 1988 Original offset lithograph (Hand signed by Keith Haring expressly for Patrick Eddington) 29 3/4 × 20 1/4 inches Signed boldly in black marker and dated 88 by Keith Haring above the Japanese text at the bottom front Unframed Our clients know that we won't buy hand signed Keith Haring works, especially posters, unless the provenance is impeccable and authenticity irrefutable. This is one of them. This already rare and collectible offset lithograph, illustrated by Haring with art direction by Maasaki Fukushi is extremely scarce when hand signed. It was created to promote the music concert "Heiwa ga ii ni Kimatteru!!" (roughly translated, it means Peace is a Good Thing, or Celebration of Peace), held in Hiroshima, Japan on August 5, 1988. Some of the musicians and bands present at the concert were as follows: Up-beat/ Koari/ARB/ Echoes/Off Course/The Shamrock/The Heart/The Blue Hearts/Sion/Zig Zag/ Hound Dog/Personz/Bakufu - Slump/Bee- Public/Loudness/ Look/ Red Warriors and many others. This work was, exceptionally, hand signed and dated by Haring and sent to Patrick Eddington (more on Mr. Eddington in a bit), and it even included the original postmarked tube that Haring sent (in Keith's own hand, which we know well from his correspondence) from Haring's home address on Broadway in Manhattan, addressed to Patrick Eddington in Utah. So who was Patrick Eddington of Utah, and why did Keith Haring send him this artwork? Patrick Eddington was a Utah school teacher who had the improbable idea of writing to his favorite artists and asking them to draw or paint pictures of cats. “This project is a labor of love," Eddington wrote of his endeavor in a 2004 letter. “It will culminate as a large book and traveling exhibition. It will also help Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. I’ve asked individuals I admire to create cat-related works. They are not the typical cat images but creative works.” One of the artists Eddington approached was the graffiti/street icon Keith Haring, with whom he engaged in communications about an even larger project as well - a mural, that alas, never came to fruition. Patrick Eddington passed away in early 2016, and his vision was, unfortunately, never realized. Nonetheless, artists like Keith Haring, William T. Wiley, Roy de Forest, Kiki Smith, Marcel Dzama and many others were inspired by the earnestness and quixotic nature of Eddington's endeavor, and sent him drawings, paintings, prints, doodles, letters and posters, like this one, which were then sold after his death. For reference and provenance only, is a photograph of the handwritten note that Haring wrote when he sent this (and another) signed postcard...Category
