About the Item
L'Assomoir is an original artwork realized by Marcellin Desboutin in 1886.
Original etching on paper before Letter.
The artwork is from the cachet "British and Foreign Artists Association". Hand-signed in pencil by the artist on the lower right corner.
Mint conditions. Passepartout included (cm 31 x 25).
Very fresh and beautiful portrait from an original drypoint preserved in the Bibliothéque National Française and representing a man smiling. The figure is characteristic and is defined by soft strokes.
The artwork has been realized by the French artist and writer Marcellin Desboutin (Cérilly, 1823 - Nice, 1902). In 1945, he worked at the atelier of the sculptor Louis-Jules Etex at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, he soon attended the painting course of Thomas Couture. He travelled along Britain, Italy and Luxembourg. In 1857, he inherited a big villa near Florence, where he lived with Edgar Degas and led a luxiourious life. In 1873, he came back to Paris where he spent a lot of time with Édouar Manet and Emile Zola at the café Guerbois.

Marcellin Desboutin
Marcellin Desboutin was born in Cérilly in 1823. In 1945, he worked at the atelier of the sculptor Louis-Jules Étex at the École des Beaux-Arts of Paris, and he soon attended the painting course of Thomas Couture. He traveled along with Britain, Italy and Luxembourg. In 1857, he inherited a big villa near Florence, where he lived with Edgar Degas and led a luxurious life. In 1873, he came back to Paris, where he spent a lot of time with Édouard Manet and Émile Zola at the Café Guerbois. Desboutin passed away in 1902, Nice, France.
