Jules Chéret
"Musee Grevin" Original Art Nouveau Cabaret Performance Poster 1900 Cheret

1900

About the Item

This is the most famous of several posters Cheret made for the Musee Grevin, a Parisian museum which offered shows to supplement its permanent exhibits. Promoting an artists’ festival, the poster is alive with a sense of magic and mystery as the curtain rises. Out from a moonlit, mist-filled background pour a mime, a beautiful dancer, a man on a mule, and a host of fascinating characters. Musee Grevin is one of the most poetic creations of Cheret, the father of the lithographic poster. Its richness of texture and color is a perfect example of the possibilities of the economical four stone technique which he invented, and how Cheret singlehandedly converted the boulevards of Paris to the “art gallery of the street.” This is an original vintage lithographic poster and is guaranteed to be an original. We are a leading antique and vintage poster dealer for 28 years - send us a message if you have any queries!

  • "Mele: Novita Per Signora" Original Vintage Fashion Poster by Cappiello
    By Leonetto Cappiello
    Located in Boston, MA
Cappiello designed four posters for Mele, the Neapolitan department store, and he clearly pulled out all the stops to create the most elegant and fashionable images of the era. Mele was the largest account for Ricordi, the pioneering Milanese lithographic printer. Since 1896 Ricordi put its very best artists to work for the retailing powerhouse. Using large format images, Mele brought the elegance and excitement of pre-war high society to an eager and growing Italian bourgeois class. Although born in Livorno, Italy, Cappiello spent most of his adult life in Paris where he became one of the most prolific posterists of all time (he created more than 500). His designs for Mele are extremely rare and among the most beautiful images in his body of work. The Novita Per Signora ("new fashions for women...

Although born in Livorno, Italy, Cappiello spent most of his adult life in Paris where he became one of the most successful and prolific posterists of all time (he created more than 500). He is known as the father of modern advertising for his captivating images that could be understood in a second, and remembered for a lifetime. The key to his work was creating a metaphor for a product that was so memorable that it could be absorbed instantly on a busy boulevard. He wrote: "Surprise is the foundation of advertising; it is its necessary condition." As a product poster...

  • "Princess Hyacinthe" Original 1911 Lithograph, Alphonse Mucha
    By Alphonse Mucha
    Located in Chicago, IL
“One of Mucha’s best Czech posters, printed by the firm of V. Neubert in the Smichov quarter of Prague, was for Princezna Hyacinta, a fairy-tale ballet and pantomime with music by Oskar Nedbal and libretto by Ladislav Novák. The portrait of the popular actress Andula Sedlácková as the princess dominates the poster. The plot develops as a dream of a village blacksmith who falls asleep after digging for a buried treasure. In his dreams he becomes lord of a castle, and his daughter Hanicka becomes the Princess Hyacinth. Of her three suitors, one is a sorcerer who abducts her to his underground palace, but she is rescued by a poor knight who looks like her real-life lover. Mucha used the motif of the hyacinth throughout the entire design, from embroideries to silver jewelry, and for an elaborate circle sparkling against the mossy green background. The portrait of the actress is seen against a sky full of stars and encircled with images from the dream: the blacksmith’s tools...

  • Muse Grevin - Pantomimes Lumineuses" Original Poster by Jules Cheret
    By Jules Chéret
    Located in Pasadena, CA
A French original poster by Jules Cheret advertising the "Theatre Optique" Optical theater owned by Emile Reynaud who presented in the Musee Grevin" the Pantomimes Lumineuses, the world’s first animated films, using his innovative system which projected light through moving pictures to offer illuminated pantomimes. It rests in its original gold leaf frame and was edited by Ateliers Cheret. A removable film under the glass protects it against the light. I have added the matching one. Jules Chéret, ( 1836-1933), one of the pioneering poster artists of the late 19th century, was quick to realize not only the aesthetic but also the commercial potential of his medium caused by changes in technology and society. After founding his own Paris studio in 1867, Chéret merged text and image in ways that predicted the advent of cartooning with their harmonious integration of elements. The proliferation of the new department stores, patronized by the growing middle class, midwifed the birth of a consumer culture that gave him new markets for his work. Chéret’s posters...
