François Roffiaen
Obersee by François Roffiaen (1820-1898) Oil on canvas

About the Item

The Watsman, a painted view between Obersee and Koningsee, Upper Bavaria. Study painted in 1856 by François Roffiaen. François Roffiaen (1820-1898): Biography François Roffiaen's family on his father's side came from humble beginnings. The men were day laborers, masons, innkeepers or saddlers, and the women were seamstresses or lacemakers. François Roffiaen was barely three years old when, for unknown reasons, he left to live with his paternal uncle, Joseph-Louis-Augustin, a bookseller in Namur, where he spent, as he himself noted, "the best years of his life" and where he attended the Athénée, as well as the Académie de peinture (1835-1839) under the direction of Ferninand Marinus (1808-1890). His fellow students included Louis Bonet (1822-1894), Jean-Baptiste Kindermans (1821-1876) and Joseph Quinaux (1822-1895). He continued his artistic studies at the Académie de Bruxelles (1839-1842), notably with the famous vedutist François Bossuet (1789-1889), who taught him perspective and was an authority on landscapes and city views. He then attended the Brussels studio of Pierre-Louis Kühnen (1812-1877), a painter from Aachen who specialized in Romantic landscape painting. Roffiaen received an annual grant of 600 francs from the city of Ypres (1841-1845 or 1846). At the same time, he taught drawing at the college in Dinant. Strongly impressed by the paintings Alexandre Calame (1810 - 1864) sent to the Belgian Salons, François Roffiaen obtained a grant for a stay in Geneva in autumn 1846 and spent six months with the master, before discovering the mountains himself. But the painter also enjoyed depicting the picturesque scenes of the Meuse and Ourthe valleys, the Scottish lochs, discovered in 1862, or the vast expanses of Limburg heather. Classified as a Romantic painter, the quality of his workmanship, particularly in his monumental large-format paintings, is hyper-realistic, even photographic, with a dazzling finesse of finish. So much so, in fact, that some critics prefer his smaller-format "studies", with their more sensitive, less smooth brushstrokes. Trained at the Brussels Academy (1839-42), Roffiaen soon signed excellent alpine landscapes and was already taking part in the major international Salons before joining Alexandre Calame. His works met with great commercial success - particularly in the 1850-60s - and he was commissioned by the aristocracy of Europe and the rest of the world (Shah of Persia). He enjoyed particular success in Belgium (the Royal House of Belgium), Great Britain and the United States. Queen Victoria asked him to visit Scotland, but the project was cancelled when Prince Albert died. In 1869, he was made a knight of the Order of Leopold. Celebrated during his lifetime, he is now being rediscovered. Roffiaen's work is also precise, full of realistic detail and exceptionally sensitive; his brushstrokes are shimmering yet fine, attentive to the path of the sun. Masterpieces that manage the miracle of balance to appear even more grandiose and intimate.

  • Oil on canvas : Cattle near the cliffs of Herne Bay KENT by Thomas Syndey Cooper
    By Thomas Sidney Cooper
    Located in Gent, VOV
Thomas Sidney Cooper was one of the foremost animal painters of the Victorian period. He was born in Canterbury, Kent, and as a small child he began to show strong artistic inclinations, but the circumstances of his family did not allow him to receive any systematic training. By the time he was twelve years old, he was working in the shop of a coach painter. Later he obtained a job as a scene painter, and he alternated between these two occupations for about eight years. He still felt a strong desire to become an artist, and all his spare moments were spent drawing and painting from nature. At the age of twenty, he went to London, drew for a while in the British Museum, and was admitted as a student of the Royal Academy. Subsequently, he returned to Canterbury, where he was able to earn a living as a drawing master and by the sale of sketches and drawings. In 1827, he settled in Brussels and married before taking up a position as a teacher in Brussels in 1829. There he befriended Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven, the great Belgian animal painter, who greatly influenced his style. He was also influenced by the 17th Century Dutch School. Because of the Belgian Revolution, he returned to London where he settled and first exhibited at Suffolk Street in 1833. He exhibited forty-eight pictures at the British Institution between 1833 and 1863. ‘Landscape and Cattle’, Royal Academy 1833, was shown until 1902 without a break - a record for a continuous exhibit at the Royal Academy. Sheep and cattle were his most frequent subjects, although he did paint a few figurative subjects. Cooper collaborated between 1847 and 1870 with Frederick Richard Lee...

I received my first drawing instruction at the age of six from my father. We were living in New Mexico at the time and he was an avid amateur landscape painter there. Although I dabbled in painting off and on for years, my first career took a different path. Following a BA from the University of Colorado and a PhD from The Ohio State University I entered a career in neuroscience research. However, in 2004, I committed to painting full time and was almost immediately rewarded with the joy of recreating scenes I loved. I am indebted to numerous mentors along the way including Mark Tompkins, Skip Whitcomb, William Scott Jennings, Jim Wilcox...

He is one of the most collected artists of our time. Jack was born in the west Texas town of Sweetwater in 1952 and began his art career as a young child, winning his first of many awards at the age of nine. A fourth-generation Texan, he credits much of his inspiration to his maternal Grandfather, Bill Mason, a rancher who cowboyed on some of the last cattle drives of the west and his paternal Grandmother, Etna Terry, who began painting late in life and welcomed young Jack to participate in the fun. Six-time world champion Cowboy Larry Mahan has said of Jack, “Terry captures the West the way it was and the way it should be. He is one of the finest artists of our day and a pretty good cowhand to boot…”. A graduate of the University of Texas, Jack studied studio art, anatomy, design and journalism while displaying his paintings in various galleries throughout the state. Upon graduation, he began painting full-time, taking every opportunity to day-work on various ranches in search of inspiration, new subject matter and authenticity. In 1976, at the young age of 24, Jack Terry was named Bicentennial Artist in Texas. He was honored with a one-man show in the state Capitol Rotunda. His portrait of President Lyndon Johnson was commissioned for publication on the Texas Bicentennial Calendar that same year. In 1999, Harvest House Publishers invited Jack to write and illustrate his first book. “The Great Trail Ride”, a collection of 14 inspirational short stories. The great success of that first title led to eight more books which sold over one million copies. In 2008 First Lady Laura Bush invited Jack to the White House for the Holiday Celebration. He painted a Christmas tree ornament representing the state of Texas. In 2010 the United States Army commissioned a painting honoring the First Air Calvary Division and the brave men and women who have served from the historic beginning of the U.S. Calvary, Viet Nam and the Middle East. Limited edition reproductions were signed by Jack, Medal of Honor Recipient Bruce Crandall from the Viet Nam War, and General Dick Cody, Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Army. Jack responded about this special occasion in 2010, “After months of research, flying time and researching films and most importantly sitting at the same table with these heroes whose commitment, loyalty and sacrifice to our great nation have made this the most meaningful painting I have ever done”. Jack Terry’s paintings hang in prominent collections throughout the country. The King Ranch...
