  • FRUIT FOR SALE
    By Frances H. Gearhart
    Located in Santa Monica, CA
FRANCES H. GEARHART and Sisters (THE GEARHARTS) FRUIT FOR SALE c.1928 Color block print. Unsigned. This is an original block print from “Let’s Play”, an intended but unpublished children’s book done in collaboration with her sisters Edna and May. Image 8 x 7 inches. On a tissue thin laid paper. Irregular sheet 9 3/8 x 8 1/2. The entire series consisted of over 20 children's images. There were very few printed. The editions of the various children varied but likely no more than 50. This impression very well printed with good colors, Very good condition. The margins are likely as issued with the irregular edges. The margins and paper used for this series varies from one print to the next. A bit of tape remnants at top center sheet edge. A very nice example of this print. It is not unusual for impressions of this series to be unsigned, although many are signed "The Gearharts" The Provenance of this example is fascinating. It was acquired from a gentleman who knew the Gearharts as a child in the early 50's in Pasadena. It was part of a collection given to him by Frances. In his adult years he was in the military and took the collection with him as he traveled around Europe, After 81 years, based on the original prints, this book was published by the “California Book...

  • 'The Bather' — 1930s American Modernism
    By Rockwell Kent
    Located in Myrtle Beach, SC
Rockwell Kent, 'The Bather', wood engraving, 1931, edition 120, Burne Jones 63. Signed in pencil. A brilliant, black impression, on cream, wove Japan paper; the full sheet with margins (2 1/2 to 3 1/4 inches); slight skinning at the top sheet edge, verso, otherwise in excellent condition. Image size 5 3/8 x 7 7/8 inches (137 x 200 mm); sheet size 11 1/8 x 14 1/2 inches (283 x 368 mm). Archivally matted to museum standards, unframed. Impressions of this work are held in the following public collections: Burne Jones Collection, IL; Chegodaev Collection, Moscow; Kent Collection, NY; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Princeton University Library, NJ; Pushkin Museum, Moscow; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Spector Collection, NY. Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), though best known as a painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, pursued many careers throughout his life, including architect, carpenter, explorer, writer, dairy farmer, and political activist. Born in Tarrytown, New York, Kent was interested in art from a young age. These ambitions were encouraged by his aunt Jo Holgate, an accomplished ceramicist. Jo came to live with the family after Kent’s father passed away in 1887 and took him to Europe as a teenager, undoubtedly kindling his interest in exploring the world. Kent attended the Horace Mann School in New York City, where he excelled at mechanical drawing. His family’s financial circumstances prevented him from pursuing a career in the fine arts; however, after graduating from Horace Mann in 1900, Kent decided to study architecture at Columbia University. Before matriculating at Columbia, Kent spent the first of three consecutive summers studying painting at William Merritt Chase’s art school in Shinnecock Hills, Long Island. There he found a community of mentors and fellow students who encouraged him to pursue his interest in art. At the end of Kent’s third summer at Shinnecock, Chase offered him a full scholarship to the New York School of Art, where he was a teacher. Kent began taking night classes at the art school in addition to his architecture studies but soon left Columbia to study painting full-time. In addition to Chase, Kent took classes with Robert Henri and Kenneth Hayes Miller, where his classmates included the artists George Bellows and Edward Hopper. Kent spent the summer of 1903 assisting the eccentric painter Abbott Handerson Thayer at his studio in Dublin, New Hampshire—a position he secured through the recommendation of his Aunt Jo. Thayer’s naturalist lifestyle and almost mystical appreciation for natural phenomena greatly influenced Kent; he returned to Dublin for many years to visit Thayer and his family. Thayer gave the young artist time to pursue his work, and that summer Kent painted several views of the New Hampshire landscape, including Mount Monadnock...

    Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Keith Bayliss. Welsh ( b.1954 ). Moonlight Embrace. Color Wash and Ink. Signed. Image size 10.4 inches x 14.4 inches ( 26.5cm x 36.5cm ). Frame size 16.7 inches x 20.1 inches ( 42.5cm x 51cm ). Available for sale is this original watercolor drawing by Welsh artist Keith Bayliss, dating from the last decade of the 20th Century. It is presented and supplied in a contemporary but complementary frame, mounted using conservation materials and behind Tru Vue UltraVue® UV70 glass. This piece is in superb condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The artwork is signed with a monogram lower left. Keith Bayliss is a superb Welsh visual artist who works in a variety of mediums, including pencil and ink on paper, oil on canvas, relief printing and small mixed media sculptural constructions. He was born in Swansea, South Wales in 1954 and continues to be based there. After graduation from Sheffield Polytechnic with a degree in Fine Arts he worked in a psychiatric hospital for over a decade, then as Community Arts Officer based at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery & Museum. Since 1991 he has worked as a freelance artists and arts educator, undertaking school, gallery and workshops, residencies, festivals and projects. He has worked with all areas of educations, the elderly, special needs and those with disability, both creating and facilitating educational projects. Throughout this time he has created stunning art, collaborated widely with musicians, poets and writers, and exhibited regularly. He has made significant contributions to making art accessible and community engagement and facilitated and curated projects both in his native Wales and throughout Europe. Bayliss has also written articles for scholastic publications and Art & Craft Magazine on numerous projects. He has written for BARN, a Welsh cultural magazine, on, among others, Josef Herman, Fred James and John Piper. Bayliss’s work regularly is almost always figurative and intensely expressive. He features angels, fools, child-adults and voyagers seemingly adrift in a world which we view with a sense of wonder. His gift is to enable us to see as they do. It has been said that whilst their bodies are often presented as frail and schematic, their faces are beautiful and brimming with detail, because he knows where to invest telling details and how to pare away the extraneous. He thus suggests complex ideas through deceptive simplicity of form. There is a sense of tenderness, of the fragility of humanity that captures the viewer. Bayliss depicts the human form in ways instantly recognisable as embodying shock, wonder, reflections and the wounds of a thoughtful life. His figures are naked, both proud and vulnerable. The settings of his works are often undefined or unrecognisable places, often featuring the curve of a hill or a moon. His protagonists are usually single or in pairs, sometimes interacting, sometimes opposing, and sometimes with a bird or an animal as a companion. Bayliss’s work is allegorical, influenced by myths, folklore and biblical tales. He has illustrated books and poems and exhibited widely. In 2008 Keith Bayliss was the first artist invited to exhibit inside St David’s Cathedral, on the western tip of Wales, as part of the new St David’s Festival of Music and the Arts. He created a series of stunning figurative images, creating works to fit the stone apex, trefoil and cinquefoil shapes of the cathedral windows and other interior cavities and spaces. This portrayed his intuitive grasp of sculptural extension and use of symbolism. He then contributed his talents as the Festival’s visual arts organiser from 2014-18, inviting subsequent artists who exhibited work in the cathedral. In recent years Bayliss has worked in collaboration with other artists or sculptors, including his son Joseph, a musician, who has provided relevant soundscapes for exhibition spaces. Bayliss tries to resist the temptation to provide explanations for his works, which he considers to develop over time. He says “I start with an idea but as time passes, the work dictates how, when and if, it has reached a conclusion. It is a dialogue between myself and the developing visual image. I am just the facilitator. The work ‘re-makes’ itself with each new visitor it encounters and the story changes. You the observer complete the work.” © Big Sky Fine Art Moonlight Embrace is an original Keith Bayliss work in colorwash and ink. It depicts a naked couple...

James McBey (1883-1959), Benicasim, etching, 1911, signed in ink and numbered lower left margin [with initials, title and date in the plate]. Reference: Hardie 96, only state, edition of 40. In very good condition, with wide margins (cut irregularly at bottom, tiny loss upper right corner), 5 5/16 x 8 3/8, the sheet 9 x 11 1/2 inches, archival matting. A fine, delicately printed impression, printed in black ink on cream laid paper. Benicasim is a small Spanish town a few miles north of Valencia. In McBey’s etching it appears beautiful, isolated and remote; today it is built up, the site of a famous pop music festival. McBey was of course a student of Rembrandt, and compositionally Benicasim may be referencing Rembrandt’s Three Trees.
