Pablo PicassoHomme nu Debout et Cheval
This stunning and iconic drypoint by Pablo Picasso was realized by the artist in 1938 at the height of his career, and printed shortly thereafter in 1942 in a small edition of 56. The work presents a nude male figure standing astride of a prancing stallion, executed in Picasso's signature and inimitable style. The horse's front legs appear off the ground; his mouth agape bearing; teeth gritted with his mane and tail flying in the wind. A male figure with a beard stands akimbo next to the horse, his arm outstretched apparently disappearing behind head of the horse, apparently in an attempt to subdue the wild stallion. The man's posture (as well as the inclusion of a horse) allude to the iconography of Greek classicism reinterpreted through a distinctly modernist lens. The horse also serves as a leitmotif in the artist's work, appearing as a prominent figure in legendary paintings such as "Guernica" and “Maya à la Poupée et au Cheval.” The face of the man with his abstracted, cubist features are unmistakably and iconically that of Picasso. The work is dated in the top left corner "2.13.38" and signed with Picasso's stamp in the bottom right corner. The drypoint was printed by Roger Lacourière in Paris in 1942- the only edition in existence- on Montval paper with the Picasso watermark. There were originally only 56 impressions of this drypoint realized in 1942. This piece offers collectors the opportunities to own an original and iconic Picasso (whose works sell at auction for upwards of 150 million dollars) at an incredibly accessible price point. The piece bears the five digit code provided by the Picasso estate and is documented in the Paris Picasso archives. Additionally, the work can be found in the Catalogue Raisonnés Block (p. 304) and Geisser/ Baer (p. 632). The piece boasts an unbeatable provenance, coming from the collection of Marina Picasso with her stamp and inventory number in pencil en verso. The piece comes presented in a custom gilded gallery frame bearing the name of the artist, as well as his date of birth and death (1881-1973). Excellent condition. Provenance: Collection of Marina Picasso, Paris Jan Krugier Gallery, New York France, Circa 1938 Dimensions: Framed: 40.5"W X 34.25"H X 2.5"D Sheet: 17.5"W X 13"H
