Framed size: 32"H x 23W x 1"D Hans Erni was born in 1909. Erni attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Lucerne in 1927-28, which was followed by further stays in Paris and Berlin. In 1933-34 he joined the artist's group Abstraction-Création in Paris, where he also met artists like Hans Arp, Alexander Calder and Wassily Kandinsky. In the 1930-40s, he was very successful with fresco painting, a medium the artist deeply preferred because of its impact on society. In 1950 Erni created his first ceramic works and discovered lithography as another central technique of his future artistic output. In 1972 he set up his studio in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, but he continued to be active in Lucerne, where he was born and obtained personal museum spaces. Leonor Fini Erotica II is depicting six nude women in various poses sitting in a circle. This is a signed limited edition etching numbering 1 out of 10. Argentinian-born artist Leonor Fini (1907-1996) is considered one of the great female artists of the twentieth century. She moved to Paris in the early 1930’s where she spent most of her life and almost immediately formed friendships with Salvador Dali, Cartier- Bresson, Max Ernst and other intellectuals of the time. At twenty five she had her first one person show in Paris and was included in the 1936 pivotal exhibition at MOMA…Fantastic Art, Dada and Surrealism…..and that same year had an exhibition at a famous avant garde gallery in New York. Although Fini never considered herself a Surrealist she maintained close personal relationships with several members of the group. Nude figurative lithograph by Jim Smyth (American, b. 1938). Numbered, titled, signed and dated "5/12", "Study 2", "Smyth 74” along the bottom edge. Unframed. Jim Smyth has studied at the Academia de Belle Arti in Fiorenza, Italy, Ecole des BeauxArts in Geneva, New York Academy, and the Art Students League. He is also a graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in Fine Art. Although academically trained, Smyth practices and teaches a more impressionistic style of painting, focusing on the Alla Prima technique. He is particularly knowledgeable about drawing, perspective, color theory and the human figure, his passion. Smyth, with extensive academic knowledge, has a profound love of all human representations as illustrated by his humorous quick sketches from life. He also practices and teaches oil painting and pastels. When not in Provence, or Southeastern France, Smyth teaches intensely in art schools, art centers and several colleges in the Bay Area. He is a beloved instructor and his classes fill in quickly as he is very knowledgeable. On his return to the United States, he began studying with Mr. Alanson Appleton at the College of San Mateo, San Mateo, California. Smyth was a founding member of the Appletree Etchers, Inc., an etching print shop organized by Mr. Appleton and his students to develop and promote color intaglio. Smyth served as Master Printer at the studio for many years perfecting the techniques of intaglio and developing the color theories of Mr. Appleton as applied to the deeply etched plate. Smyth received his degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972 and holds the California Community College Certificate and an Adult Education Certificate. Smyth was invited to teach "Anatomy for Artists" at Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, California, as a result of his many years of dissection of the cadaver and developed the course of study of Perspective for the college. During this period, he began teaching Life Drawing at the Pacific Art League of Palo Alto, Palo Alto, California. During the following thirty years Smyth has taught an average of twelve classes per week at the Pacific Art League of Palo Alto, the Palo Alto Art Center and the Burlingame Recreation Department among others in all phases of drawing and painting. He has conducted many workshops for the California Academy of Painters in many aspects of drawing and painting. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor of Drawing at the College of San Mateo, San Mateo, California. He is an authority on the materials of painting and drawing, techniques of traditional drawing and painting, color theory, perspective and anatomy for artists. In his career in Life Drawing, Smyth has made over two hundred thousand drawings from the model. In addition to studies at Berkeley, Smyth has studied at the College of San Mateo, Foothill College, De Anza College, Mission College, and West Valley College, all in California. One of the pivotal points in his career was studying with Mr. Maynard Dixon Stewart at the University of San Jose, California. He spent a year at the New York Academy of Art where he was offered a full scholarship and at the Art Students League of New York. He concurrently attended classes at the National Academy of Design in New York. Among others, Smyth studied with M. Construction d’un temple – Plate n. 3  is a b/w original etching realized in 1973 (as reported on plate on the lower right margin) by Paul Delvaux. From the collection “ Construction d’un temple en ruine à la déesse Vanadé ”, this wonderful original print   came into being from the collaboration of four years between the French author and a member of the Nouveau-Roman , Alain Robbe-Grillet (1922-2008), and the Belgian artist Paul Delvaux (1897-1994). At first, Robbe-Grillet wrote a text, to which Delvaux then replied with a wonderful engraving; Robbe-Grillet then responded with a second text. This is how the building blocks of this beautiful book came together: it was constructed like a temple.  The book was printed in an edition of 187 copies, of which  only 40 contain the illustrations by Paul Delvaux .  Our copy is unnumbered and printed on  “Arches”  ivory colored paper with the  Bateau Lavoir watermark  (on the lower right corner), and  “Richard Bas ” watermark (on the lower left margin). Artist's alternative names: Apel·les Fenosa, Apelles Fenosa Spanish Sculptor Fenosa was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1899 and as a young man worked in the studio of sculptor Enrique Casanovas where he came into contact with the ideas and adherents of the Modernist Movement and its influence in Barcelona, Paris and other European cities. In 1917 he founded together with Joan Rebull, Josep Granyer and Josep Viladomat the group The Evolutionists. He arrived in Paris in 1921. There he quickly gravitated into the Parisian avant garde artist community and became friends with Pablo Picasso, who became an early patron of his work, buying a significant number of his sculptures, and with the sculptor Max Jacob. By 1924 Fenosa was exhibiting in Paris and in his native city of Barcelona. Max Jacob wrote the preface to the catalogs of Fenosa's first Paris exhibition, and his show at the Zborowski gallery in 1928. In 1931 Fenosa was in Catalonia when the Second Spanish Republic was declared. There he remained in order to work with the anarchist movement and participate in the Republican ranks during the Spanish Civil War. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1936 and with the coming to power of the Franco Fascist regime left Spain once again to settle in Paris. In 1942, he met the painter and poet, Paul Eluard, who became a close friend. In 1944, the Comite de Liberation du Limousin (Organization for the Liberation of the Limousin) commissions a sculpture to commemorate the Nazi killings of Oradour-sur-Glane. He creates the "Monument aux Martyrs d'Oradour-sur-Glane" (Monument to the Martyrs of Oradour) presently in Limoges. From 1946 Fenosa exhibited individually or collectively in Paris, London, Barcelona, ​​Madrid, Prague, New York, Tokyo, Rabat, Osaka, Casablanca, Carrara.
