Claes Oldenburg Art

American, Swedish, 1929-2022

One of the original Pop artists, Claes Oldenburg was born in Stockholm. The son of a Swedish diplomat, he spent his early years in Stockholm and Oslo until the family moved to Chicago in 1937.

Oldenburg attended Yale University, then returned to Chicago, where he worked for a newspaper and also attended drawing classes at the Art Institute. He moved to New York in 1956.

Oldenburg’s early art in New York were works of urban realism in cardboard and paper that were influenced by the work of Dubuffet and the New Realists, and were seen as a brutal response to society. In 1961 Oldenburg rented a storefront on the Lower East Side and sold brightly painted plaster objects as well as three-dimensional and wall reliefs based on hamburgers, pastries, men's and women's clothing, and other commodities. The signature soft sculptures followed, objects of commonplace household objects made of vinyl or canvas stuffed with kapok. These pieces transformed the medium — the soft sculptures are intended to be sensual experiences and commentary on our material world of objects and our relationship to them.

In 1965, still working in vinyl, plaster and cardboard, Oldenburg began making large works termed “Colossal Monuments,” which are large public sculptures with public and private meanings. In the 1970s, Oldenburg was fabricating large-scale works in durable materials such as steel, and working with Coosje van Bruggen, he had received many such public commissions in the United States and Europe.

Figure and Phallus: erotic nude drawing of woman in heels in rainbow of colors
By Claes Oldenburg
Located in New York, NY
This etching features a nude woman in high heels. Whipping her head to the left, she gazes intently past the viewer through a wild tangle of tresses. A sunhat with a bow nearly floats off her head, a tongue-in-cheek nod to modesty. Taking a wide stance, she straddles a comically large phallus, which springs up eagerly from the ground like a plant. Unusually, this etching was drawn directly onto the plate from the artist’s imagination and not from a life model. This spontaneity is visible around the woman’s bust and arms, where Oldenburg sketched several variations of her anatomy, giving the impression of a figure in movement. Beside her left breast, Oldenburg extends this halo of lines by cheekily doodling a small, floating phallus. Paper 36 x 27.5 in. / 91.4 x 69.2 cm. Plate 23.5 x 17.7 in. / 59.7 x 45.1 cm. Etching in one color on white, thick, slightly textured Wookey Hole handmade paper watermarked with the artist’s signature. Signed by the artist and dated 1975 lower right in pencil. The edition of 60 includes ten prints in each of six different ink colors: Indigo blue, vermilion, mauve, burnt sienna, astral blue, and yellow-ochre. A copy of each color is available: this listing is for one copy in the color of your choice. As recorded in the artist’s unpublished notes: “In 1974 an ambitious project for a suite of large-scale etchings was hatched with Paul Cornwall-Jones, for production by Maurice Payne in Petersburg Press’s new Pembroke studios in London. The project would consist of meticulous transcriptions of a certain group of drawings...

Claes Oldenburg "Ice Bag" Lithograph of Sculpture Pop Art
By Claes Oldenburg
Located in Detroit, MI
Claes’ first kinetic sculpture, 1970, was “Ice Bag” rising in height from 7 to 16 feet with a diameter of 18 feet. He was interested in ice bags as a sculptural subject because of their compelling form. The surface wavers between rippled and smooth, hard and soft. This lithograph with blue and red crayon is a sketch of the “Ice Bag” sculpture and was created by Claes as a thank you gift for certain individuals. Eric Saarinin & Associates had rented an art studio to film Oldenburg sketching on its walls the genesis of the ice bag and his thoughts about the Icebag. When the owner of the studio returned and found his pristine walls covered with scrawls, he had a fit…until he understood the present value of that heavily marked, white expanse. They thought about how to remove the drawings. Well, it couldn’t be done, but they are preserved in the film directed by Michael Hugo and produced by Eric Saarinen. The Lithograph is printed by Kenneth Tyler, carries the blind stamp and is marked (Gem.II), G.E.L. It is numbered 2 of 26, dated and signed by Oldenburg and owned by Eric Saarinen who received it as a gift from Claes. Unframed it measures 16 1/8 x 22 5/16. Claes Oldenburg was a Swedish-born American sculptor, best known for his public art installations typically featuring large replicas of everyday objects. Another theme in his work is soft sculpture versions of everyday objects. Many of his works were made in collaboration with his wife, Coosje van Bruggen, who died in 2009; they had been married for 32 years. Oldenburg was born in Stockholm, Sweden, but because of his father’s diplomatic career he lived most of his life in the states mainly New York and California. He attended Yale University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Oldenburg became associated with the pop art movement and created many happenings, that were so popular in the late 1960s and thru the 1970s. They were performance art related productions. The name he gave to his own productions was "Ray Gun “Theater”. The cast of colleagues who appeared in his performances included artists: Lucas Samaras, Tom Wesselmann, Carolee Schneemann...

Claes Oldenburg Stars (Cat. Raisonne Ref: 29, Axsom & Platzker, 1997), 1963 Letterpress in 1 colour over stock offset lithograph "rainbow roll" in 3 colours on wood board 28 × 22 inches Published by Washington Gallery of Modern Art; Printed by Globe Poster, Baltimore An extremely rare and important piece of Pop Art history - and a must have for collectors of Oldenburg's work. This historic poster was published on the occasion of the performance "Stars: A Farce for Objects" at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, Washington, D.C., April 24 and 25, 1963. It was one of the earliest "Happenings" - done by Claes Oldenburg. D.C. might have seemed an unlikely venue, but it was during the idealistic and arts friendly Kennedy era - seven full months before the President's shocking assassination. Oldenburg was invited by Alice Denney, the assistant director of the fledgling Washington Gallery of Modern Art, for The Pop Art Festival she was organizing alongside her pioneering show of Pop Art, “The Popular Image Exhibition,” which opened in April 1963. It included a lecture/tape recorder performance by John Cage and a multi-ring dance event organized by Billy Kluver and featuring Yvonne Rainer...

Ice Cream Desserts (A) Claes Oldenburg dessert parfait etching in rainbow pastel
By Claes Oldenburg
Located in New York, NY
The painterly, multicolored effect of this pastel ice cream still life is achieved by printing “à la poupée”, in which multiple colors can be applied to the plate for printing at one time. Oldenburg first printed in brown, and for the second plate, freely applied yellow, green, purple, blue, and light purple, producing an array of loosely sketched pastel confections. Image 13.5 x 21.15 in. / 34.3 x 53.7 cm Paper 22.5 x 31.25 in. / 57 x 79.4 cm Soft-ground etching and aquatint in six colors “à la poupée” on cream, thick, slightly textured Arches paper. Signed by the artist with initials lower center in pencil, dated 1976 lower right in pencil, and annotated AP VIII/XII lower left in pencil. Ice cream is a subject Claes Oldenburg has returned to again and again: from monumental sculptures of ice cream cones, to plaster parfaits, to countless drawings and designs. On his soft sculptures, Oldenburg wrote: "Reversing the expectations of hard sculpture, these huge collapsing objects rely on gravity and chance for their final form." The drooping edges of his soft sculptures connect to the unpredictably melting surface of ice cream, which he has explored viscerally through his dripped plaster ice cream sculptures...
