Tete D’Homme Au Maillot Raye (Man’s Head With Striped Shirt), 1964
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Created in 1964, this color aquatint on Auvergene Richard de Bas paper is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in graphite in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in graphite in the lower left margin; published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris; printed by Crommelynck, Paris. A beautiful and eclectic array of colors make up the face of Pablo Picasso Tete D’Homme Au Maillot Raye (Man’s Head With Striped Shirt), 1964. Though the striped shirt is made out to be the defining factor of this man, the navy blues do not draw attention so much as the bright yellow eye, the verdant hair, or the criss-crossing blue and red nose. The eyes of the man are almost inverses of one another, creating an interesting symmetry across the face. Similarly, there are two noses that one could follow down the face, each with the bridge pointing in a different direction. Picasso liked to explore the idea of multiple perspectives on a face or scene, and we see that clearly here with the opposite curves of the nose. A simple orange smile makes up final element of this fun-loving and colorful print. Catalogue Raisonné & COA: Pablo Picasso Tete D’Homme Au Maillot Raye (Man’s Head With Striped Shirt), 1964 is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the sale of the work). 1. Baer, Brigitte. Picasso Peintre-Graveur, Tome V. Galerie Kornfeld: Switzerland, 1989. Listed and illustrated as catalogue raisonné no. 1164 2. Bloch, Georges. TÊTE DE FEMME NO. 6. PORTRAIT DE DORA MAAR
Located in San Francisco, CA
Original aquatint printed in four colors (red-brown, green, blue, black) from four plates on Montval laid paper. Bloch 1338; Baer 654.D. Literature regarding this artwork: Brigitte Baer, Picasso the Printmaker: Graphice from the Marina Picasso Collection, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, 1983, no. 72 p. 116 (ill.); Emmanuel Benador, Picasso Printmaker: A Perpetual Metamorphosis, QCC Art Gallery, The City University of New York, Bayside, New York, 2008, no. 38, p. 85 (ill.). This is one of seven prints Picasso made in 1939 for a book project he conceived himself which was to combine color aquatints and a calligraphic text of his own authorship (see Baer 648, 650-655).  The project was never realized, probably because its unprecedented form and content intimidated publishers.  All that has survived are the impressions of the prints themselves, such as this one, whose complete editions Picasso kept, and which were discovered in his studio after his death. In the early 20th century, Jacques Villon, Mary Cassat...
