Alison Bell has been selling with Wychwood Art Gallery for a number of years and we stock all of her works. Alison Bell sculptor comments "I try to make work that touches the free spirit in us, most often through memories of childhood. I’m drawn to the times when we lived and played in our own imagination, unobserved, scaling fortresses & standing on the ramparts as kings of the castle just quietly inventing our own worlds." "My work is essentially figurative and rooted in my early practice as a portrait sculptor. While the truth of the figure is important to me, my aim is to evoke the moment - the energy, the glee, our curiosity, the tenderness in our hearts." "I work freely & quickly in wax, observing & remembering, and then refine each piece before casting in bronze." Leslie Fry, Untitled (Little Cuffed), bronze fantastical sculpture female hand
Located in New York, NY
A 2023 recipient of the Vermont Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, Leslie Fry is represented in this show with fantastical sculptures of female hands, titled the “Cuffed” series. Tensely poised and mannered gestures, inspired by Parmigianino and Caravaggio, cascade into blooms and barnacles, creating a mesmerizing visual dissonance. This elision of romance and rigidity both draws attention to the limitations of the female form and liberates it from the constraints of reality. Leslie Fry’s works have been exhibited internationally at such venues as Kunsthaus in Hamburg, Zwitscher Machine Gallery in Berlin, Hangaram Art Museum in Seoul, Windspiel Galerie in Vienna, Couvent des Cordeliers in Paris, Artists Space and Wave Hill in New York, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum near Boston, and Centre des Arts Visuels in Montreal. Her public sculptures have been commissioned in New York, South Korea, Montreal, Florida, Wisconsin, and Vermont; public collections include Tufts University, Songchu International Sculpture Park, Freehand New York, Kohler Arts Center, Tampa Museum of Art, Fleming Museum of Art, Musée d’art de Joliette, and St. Petersburg, Florida’s Museum of Fine Arts. Fry’s M.F.A. is from Bard College, and her B.A. is from the University of Vermont, with a Foundation year at the Central School of Art in London. She currently lives and works in Winooski, VT. Artist Statement: #1 My hands reach, touch, and shape. Hands let go and receive; they try to hold things and to hold things together. Some of my images of hands are derived from Mannerist paintings by Parmigianino and Caravaggio, and are ink-washed onto vintage tablecloths...

The Missing Piece
Located in Belfast, GB
The Missing Piece is a bronze artwork suitable for inside or outdoor display. Pollock is referencing life in with the crow and the puzzle piece. "I never limit myself to one subject or style of work and can never say where the work will go next, which makes it exciting for myself and I hope for the viewer. I like the fact that bronze is so permanent, a bronze sculpture is going to be around forever." - Pollock (2019) Dublin born sculptor Ian Pollock is primarily a self-taught artist who has spent his career working in the Cast Foundry in the Liberties area of Dublin. Working exclusively in bronze, Pollock has worked with art ever since he was a young child. His work is a three dimensional diary of his daily existence. His bronzes are cast using a 'cire perdue' (lost wax) method in ceramic shell moulds. In the pursuit of excellence, he has compiled meticulous craftsmanship in the medium of bronze sculpture. Inspiration for his sculptures comes from aspects of daily life, Pollock sees his work 'as a three dimensional diary' of his life; "I never limit myself to one subject or style of work and can never say where the work will go next, which makes it exciting for myself and I hope for the viewer. I like the fact that bronze is so permanent, a bronze sculpture is going to be around forever". Pollock has exhibited and sold his work throughout Ireland and the UK; including the Oireachtas, RHA, and the RUA (where he won the Mullan Prize for sculpture in 2003). Pollock's work can be found in the collections of the Office of Public Works and University College Dublin, as well as many private collections in Europe and the USA. Large commissions include an eleven foot flight of birds for Largy College in Clones, Co. Monaghan, along with many life size private commissions. Pollock continues to exhibit with Gormleys Gallery...

[Morgan Le Fey]
By Hazel Brill Jackson
Located in Boston, MA
Signed on base: "Hazel Brill Jackson". Also with artist's monogram. In fine condition. Hazel Brill Jackson (Born December 15, 1894, in Philadelphia) spent most of her early childhood in Italy. Attending the Scuola Rosatti in Florence, Jackson enjoyed afternoons at the zoo, pursuing her favorite pastime: drawing animals. World War I forced the return of the Jackson family to the United States where they settled in Boston. Hazel spent the next four years at the Boston Museum School, where she studied with Bela Pratt and Charles Grafly. Jackson returned to Rome after the war, where she worked with Angelo Zanelli and later had her own studio. With such works as Roman Work Horse and Ned (Mussolini's favorite jumper), she began to exhibit both in Rome and Florence, and eventually became a member of the Circolo Artistico di Roma. The sculptress returned to the United States in 1935 and opened a studio in Newburgh, New York. She continued to sculpt animals, concentrating on horse and dog portraits. Jackson had one-woman shows at the Guild of Boston Artists in 1938 and in 1968. In 1945, she was awarded the Ellin P. Speyer Prize by the National Academy of Design in New York City for Play-Day and Romance (a mare and foal group) and in 1949, she won the same prize for Indian Antelope. Hazel Jackson is represented in the Brookgreen Gardens collection by The Listeners, a sculpture group of raccoons, which was placed there in 1964. Don Quixote, now at Wellesley College won Jackson the Mahonri Young...

Pop Culture, Bronze Sculpture: 'Athena'
Located in New York, NY
Inspired by amateur archaeologists such as Heinrich Schliemann who discovered Troy and by past elaborate hoaxes like that of the Piltdown Man, Joshua travels the world performing staged archaeological excavations exposing the malleability of our history. During these performances he discovers his own versions of historical artifacts, crafted from objects from his youth--such as baseball cards, G.I. Joe action figures, POGS, and various other toys and items. His discoveries and claims, while false and absurdly comical, are based on real research. Joshua Goode: Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1981, Joshua Goode is researching and developing mythic historical misinterpretations and manipulations in an effort to expose the malleability of our past, present and future. His alternate history and mythology preserve memories of childhood ranch life in Texas by reimagining objects and imagery from his youth as iconic ancient artifacts. Having studied history and worked as an archaeologist on many actual excavations, he conducts staged excavations around the world, working with the community as a performance. The constructed artifacts of his invented civilization mix fact and fiction to appropriate and distort the history and myths of each region he engages. His ‘artifacts’ have been exhibited in solo exhibitions in international venues such as the Razliv Museum, St. Petersburg, (Russia); Capellades Museum, Barcelona, (Spain); Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai, (China); Darb 1718 in Cairo, (Egypt); LaSala Gallery, Zaragoza, (Spain); Galerija Miroslav Kraljevic...

'Sunbathing' original stone Shona sculpture by Washington Msonza
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Sunbathing' is an original stone sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Washington Msonza. In the sculpture, a woman reclines nude and on the ground in a moment of relaxation under the sun. She holds a child on her lap and he two gaze at one another in a moment of bonding and adoration. This intimate composition reminds, on one hand, of the great painting 'Olympia' by the relist painter Édouard Manet by nature of the nude woman in repose. On the other, it also recalls the subject matter of the Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt, whose work often focused on domestic scenes of mothers and their children. All of these art historical references are nonetheless contained within the materiality of the serpentine stone itself, in which Msonza uses the polish and texture of the stone to capture skin and hair and the subtly of the figures' expressions. opal stone (serpentine) 26.5 x 36.5 x 12 inches 200+ lbs not singed Overall good condition; some minor surface abrasions.
