Read the Sun by Louis Rhead, Art Nouveau Japon lithograph, 1897
By Louis Rhead
Located in Chicago, IL
“America was quick to reveal strong Art Nouveau voices; it was Louis Comfort Tiffany who encouraged Bing to open his salon, and artists Will Bradley and Ethel Reed exhibited a Japonist simplicity that presented a strong, refined take on the Art Nouveau ideal. Louis Rhead was born in England but emigrated to the United States in 1883 at the age of 24, and quickly found himself celebrated both in the United States and in France, exhibiting his designs in the prestigious Salon des Cent in Paris in 1897.”
-Quoted from Flowering Lines: Rare Art Nouveau Graphics 1883-1911 by Thomas Negovan (2017)
Lithograph of Louis Rhead’s Read The Sun, published in 1897 by Imprimerie Chaix, the printing house known for publishing the works of Belle Epoque master Jules Chéret.
While this poster was printed in multiple sizes and formats, this 1897 edition of 25 strikes on Japon paper is the most desirable and extremely scarce edition. Japon paper allows inks to rest upon its surface rather than being absorbed by a more permeable paper stock. The rare, small format poster lithographs created at this time were printed using rich, dense, lead inks. This world-class example of lithography captures superior resolution and color-richness to that of its large-format counterpart.
This piece is presented professionally framed using all archival materials, including a hand-wrapped silk mat. This work arrives accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Rudolph Bauer
1889-1953
Rudolf Bauer was born in Lindenwald near Bromberg, Silesia, in 1889 but his family moved only a few years later to Berlin. In 1905 Bauer began his studies at the Berlin Academy of Art but left the Academy only a few months later to educate himself. The upshot was paintings, caricatures and comical drawings which were published in 'Berliner Tageblatt', 'Ulk' and 'Le Figaro'.
From 1912 Bauer contributed to the magazine and Gallery 'Der Sturm' founded by Herwarth Walden and pivotal to German Expressionism and the international avant-garde. In 1915 Rudolf Bauer participated for the first time in a group show at Walden's gallery. There he met Hilla von Rebay, with whom he began a relationship of many years that was crucial to Bauer's later work. By 1922 Bauer had shown work at about eight exhibitions mounted by 'Der Sturm'. From 1918 he also taught at the 'Der Sturm' art school, where Georg Muche was the director. After the war ended, Bauer was a founding member of the 'November Group' although he did not collaborate closely with the group. In 1919 Bauer joined forces with the painter and architect Otto Nebel and with Hilla von Rebay to found the artists' association 'Die Krater'. Impressionist at the outset, Bauer's early work reveals Cubist and Expressionist influences. By 1915/16 Bauer had switched to an abstract pictorial idiom, which is markedly influenced by Kandinsky. In the early 1920s Bauer was also preoccupied with Russian Constructivism as well as the Dutch de Stijl group. Bauer's decided preference for non-representational painting culminated in 1929 with the foundation of a private museum, 'Das Geistreich', which he directed as a salon for abstract art.
Political developments in Germany forced Bauer to sell some of his work in America from 1932. His agent in America was Hilla von Rebay, who was by now director of the Guggenheim Collection. In 1936 she organized a touring exhibition of non-representational European art that included sixty Rudolf Bauer oil...

Paris sans fin
Located in London, GB
First edition, from the edition of 250 copies on Vélin d’Arches from a total edition of 270; large 4to (42.2 x 32 cm); artist’s signature stamp to limitation page, 150 lithographs after Giacometti, loose as issued in publisher's printed wrappers, glassine wrappers, cloth chemise and slipcase.
Giacometti’s testament to art and modern life in his beloved Paris.
For Tériade it would be a milestone, the last great publication he would see through the press. The two men [Tériade and Giacometti] had maintained a close friendship ever since the Surrealist Years. The one hundred and fifty lithographs are a profoundly interpenetrating view of Giacometti's experience of Paris. He selected the plates to be printed and determined the order of their relationship, numbering each one. The frontispiece shows a nude figure of a woman plunging forward, as though diving into space, and is immediately followed by a quantity of views of city streets, then of interiors familiar to the artist. We come upon views of his studio, of the cafes he frequented, of Annette's apartment in the rue Mazarine and Caroline's in the Avenue du Maine, strangers at cafe tables, passers by, parked automobiles, the towers of Saint-Suplice, bridges across the Seine, The Eiffel Tower. To accompany the hundred and fifty plates, a text of twenty pages was planned, but the artist never got further than a few rough drafts. True, he was a devotee of words, Paris sans fin, however, said too much to the eye to be in need of other symbols (James Lord...
