Function follows form in this circa 1900 Baltimore mansion, handily updated for the 21st century without losing its turn-of-the-century charm. In the words of designer Mona Hajj, “The mixing of old and new in both architecture and interiors was purposeful but not binding.”
After introducing new lighting, appliances and cabinetry in the kitchen, not to mention a family-size island, Hajj selected a handful of eye-catching treasures, from Middle Eastern carpets and Islamic-era Spanish ceramics to a tour-de-force Dutch table carved of hardwood oak in the 17th century. “Beautiful and happily used,” Hajj reports.
