Gold Coast Chicago apartment buildings are plentiful, but only one was designed by the great Rosario Candela: this classical 1931 high-rise, where locally based designed Tom Stringer has plaid homage to the architect with an inspired take on traditional decor.
Playing with the age-old concept of tone-on-tone in a moody library, Stringer explores neutral ground in the upholstery (on a Hickory Chair sofa and the client’s own chairs) and bold vermillion in a pair of Josef Albers prints that instantly freshen the space.
The supporting cast: chocolate lacquer lamps from Visual Comfort and citrus-striped pillows in a Jim Thompson fabric with Lee Jofa trim. “The juxtaposition of traditional interiors and contemporary art always seems relevant, and it always works,” asserts Stringer.
