Off to Africa: Inaugural Guild Design Fair

Africa celebrates its first ever international fair of contemporary collectible design, on view now through March 29th in Cape Town, South Africa , designated the UNESCO World Design Capital for 2014. The Guild Design Fair showcases nine exhibitors, including Design Network Africa, England’s Victoria and Albert Museum, Spain’s Nacho Carbonell, and New York’s (and our very own) R & Company.

The fair’s founders, Trevyn and Julian McGowan of Southern Guild, want to highlight the growing taste and enthusiasm for design and innovation throughout the continent. In bringing together creators, curators and collectors, they’re opening a dialogue new to this part of the world: “Craft is very old in Africa, but design is very young. Part of the global appeal of contemporary South African design is that it’s unfettered, imaginative and energetic…South Africa has something very new to say.”
