The Met Gala is famed for inspiring some pretty dramatic looks from its guests. This year’s red carpet had no shortage of daring outfits, but there was restraint in one regard: color. Celebrities opted for black or white outfits, allowing tailoring, the theme of this year’s gala, to command all the attention.
White suits appeared again and again, with Zendaya’s slim Louis Vuitton number, paired with a floppy white hat, being perhaps the most memorable. Anna Sawai wore a strikingly similar outfit: an all-white Dior ensemble with a similarly slack hat. Madonna sported a Haider Ackermann tuxedo for Tom Ford. Christian Latchman, Tyler Mitchell, Imaan Hammam and Mary J. Blige all joined in the white-suit brigade.
Darker-hued looks were plentiful as well. Ego Nwodim made her Met Gala debut in a sculptural black three-piece peplum suit by Christopher John Rogers. Also opting for somber hued ensembles were Kim Kardashian, in Chrome Hearts; Charli XCX, in Ann Demeulemeester by Stefano Gallici; and Issa Rae, in Ozwald Boateng. Rihanna wore a black-and-white Marc Jacobs skirt suit accented with a red scarf, plus a sapphire ring from 1stDibs seller Joseph Saidian and Sons. The singer and business mogul, who is known for announcing her pregnancies in dramatic fashion, chose the occasion to reveal that she is expecting her third child. Talk about bringing the drama!
