Zendaya hit the red carpet at the Golden Globes this past Sunday with a diamond on her left ring finger, and speculation quickly spread that the actress and her longtime boyfriend, actor Tom Holland, were engaged. Celebrities often borrow jewels for awards shows, so it was only a suspicion that Zendaya was wearing an engagement ring — until People confirmed the news a day later.
The engagement ring is believed to be a Jessica McCormack design. It’s composed of a 5.02-carat cushion-cut diamond in an east-west setting, meaning that the stone sits horizontally across the band instead of vertically. Generally used for emerald-, pear– and marquise-cut stones, east-west settings are unusual with cushion cuts. And that makes the combination a singularly fitting choice for a singular talent and fashion luminary like Zendaya.
For the event, Zendaya wore a strapless burnt-orange Louis Vuitton gown, along with a Bulgari necklace sporting at its center another rare gem, a 31-carat Paraíba tourmaline, per Town and Country.
Zendaya wasn’t the only recently engaged celebrity at the Globes. Last month Selena Gomez, who was nominated for her work in the film Emilia Pérez and the TV show Only Murders in the Building, announced her engagement to music producer Benny Blanco. In an Instagram post, she shows off the ring: a large marquise-cut diamond with a pavé band.
