Scarves Are an Unexpectedly Fresh Accessory This Summer

This simple move can jazz up any outfit without bringing on the heat.

For those who love layers and accessorizing, the summer months can be a particularly frustrating time. Blessedly, an accessory is currently trending that can completely change an outfit without being so precious that you wouldn’t want to sweat in it and without adding bulky layers that are uncomfortable in the heat. The piece in question? An airy scarf tied around the waist.

As Harper’s Bazaar and InStyle report, many celebrities have given the look their personal seals of approval. Alexa Chung wore a silk scarf tied around her waist over a simple outfit of gray trousers and white T-shirt, proving how quickly it can make even the most basic outfit appear thoughtful. Kylie Jenner went for a considerably more resort-friendly take, styling a floral-print scarf over white pants with a spaghetti-strap bikini top.

Actresses Lola Tung and Jennifer Lawrence have been seen with scarves around their waists, too, as have influencer Monica de La Villardière and stylist Lolita Jacobs. Choices have ranged from Hermès silk scarves to beachy pareos to cotton bandanas. Regardless of the variety or how one wears it, a scarf can provide a pop of color and a playfulness to any outfit.

If one designer is winning the scarf trend, though, it has to be Emilio Pucci. Some TikTok users have dubbed this season “Pucci girl summer,” the New York Times reports, with the brand’s sales more than doubling year on year. Elle Decor describes the Pucci girl as “drenched in the brand’s signature multicolored swirls” and sporting “a cleverly fashioned silk scarf as she steps out on the Riviera or stretches beneath the Mediterranean sunshine.” We can’t deny it — an Emilio Pucci scarf adds lightness to even the most blisteringly hot summer day.
