“This is part of my series, ‘Disappearing San Onofre.’ While down at San Onofre painting, I saw a boy teaching himself to surf. I noticed him come in after one too many mouthfuls of salt water. He took the time to wash the sand and seaweed off his board, but he was too tired to put away his board. He just sat down. Rather than trying to cover his crumpled pride through cussing and expletives, he sat, looked, and recovered, measuring his experience. It was heart lifting, in what looked to be defeat, he was not defeated, only disappointed—knowing he will try again. I could only smile. This kid had a rare kind of victory.”

“The magnolia tree and I share common rots in the Southeast. The Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee are home to us both. This stately, ancient tree is native to the Southeast. Its large fragrant blossoms and dark, shiny leaves adorn the green lawns and line the streets of the small towns where I am from. So, when I moved to California, I was pleasantly surprised to see this icon from the South growing freely here as well! “Everything I have here is an ingredient or a utensil used to make kombucha. Well, maybe books are not that essential and neither are the big wooden spoons, but they look good in the composition. Well, I also did not show any scoby—a bacterial yeast culture which is the main ingredient— although one could argue that scoby was in one of the glass bottles before we used it to make our homebrew. That’s what my wife does. We have full shelves of homemade kombucha in bottles with all different flavors, suited for all different tastes. Great stuff...

"Over a decade ago, before this Fatburger location in Sherman Oaks was renovated, I was admiring the evening neon light bouncing off of these chrome stools. I had even started to paint the entire parking lot full of cars across the street, but decided that the mood of the piece would be enhanced if I changed it to a seaside location, making this piece more of a fiction. Story often draws me into a painting, and I felt the exaggerated aloneness was more connected to the feelings of inspiration I found in this place."
