This plein air oil painting depicts the uniqueness of Anacapa Island in the chain of Southern California’s Channel Islands archipelago. Anacapa was formed by volcanic eruptions. Its desolate landscape is dominated by a distinct geology of steep precipices and jagged rock formations. From this elevated viewpoint, Adams portrays the location known as Cathedral Cove with its outcropping spires and massive kelp beds that hug the shoreline. Marion Kavanagh was a pupil of William Keith in San Francisco who, upon learning of her move to Southern California, urged her to contact Pasadena artist Elmer Wachtel. A romance blossomed and the two were married in 1904. During their marriage, out of respect for her husband, Marion Wachtel painted in watercolor, giving Elmer Wachtel the honor of painting in the more “serious” medium of oil. After the untimely passing of her husband and a period of grieving, Marion took up oil painting in 1930, working both en plein air and in the studio. “My painting, Mother and Child, is a depiction of my daughter and I, inspired by whimsical themes we both enjoy. Studying Pre-Raphaelite paintings, Mother and Child evokes rich Roman Catholic iconography. Poland has this imagery everywhere, as it is home to Our Lady of Czensztochowa. As I am Polish, I draw heavy affection for this imagery. While creating this work I kept this Agatha Christie
quote in mind:
‘A mother’s love for her child is like nothing
else in the world, it knows no law, no pity, it
dares all things and crushes down remorselessly
all that stands in its path.’
In this painting I’ve chosen to portray us outdoors in a dreamlike setting, using vivid colors, lighting and environment. I’ve applied gold and pearlescent paint in the foundation layers which peek through at times. In choosing a pose—her hands touching my face, I hope the viewer sees the love and bond that we share.”

“This tender loving care is a necessary maintenance chore for these Native Iroquois women. It enhances the longevity of these delicate water craft. Their hulls of birch bark are thin and easily punctured. Heated resin is used to patch problem areas. Bark patches can be sewn, using Spruce roots, and resined over larger holes. These roots are also used to lash around gunnel, bow & stern. These canoes are extremely light weight, easily maneuverable, and capable of carrying heavy loads. I have one and it can be lifted with one hand and is a joy to paddle.”

“I often will go on painting trips with other artists to remote locations to do plein air sketches and gather reference for larger studio paintings. This was painted from a winter painting trip to Montana, where about ten of us gathered together at a cabin in February to paint landscapes and portraits in the snow. The morning when I saw this scene, we were all heading out into the fresh snow to go paint landscape—my artist friend was standing just outside the door of the cabin in this pose, contemplating the day ahead and looking like a painting himself! The early morning sky was white, as fresh snow was falling all around, blanketing the landscape and tree behind him. I knew this was a moment I had to capture in paint—an artist immersed in reflective thought on a winter morning.”
