Artist Statement
"First light
on mountain spires
reveal brilliant
exclamation points—
morning prayers!
My favorite place to paint is in the mountains, and my favorite mountains are the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. I feel most alive and happy tramping around the lakes and peaks of this beautiful range—the “Range of Light” as John Muir called it—and trying to convey with paint my complete love and awe of this place. It is my cathedral. The best way for me to worship there is to camp—to be fully immersed, to feel the wind, enjoy the scents, hear the bird and animal calls—and be able to wake up early, crawl out of my tent and grab art equipment to record the first morning rays hitting the highest peaks!"

- The Not DefeatedLocated in Pasadena, CAAcquired by the gallery directly from the artist UNRAMED: 29" x 40" FRAMED: 36" x 47" x 1.625" Artist Statement “This is part of my series, ‘Disappearing San Onofre.’ While down at San Onofre painting, I saw a boy teaching himself to surf. I noticed him come in after one too many mouthfuls of salt water. He took the time to wash the sand and seaweed off his board, but he was too tired to put away his board. He just sat down. Rather than trying to cover his crumpled pride through cussing and expletives, he sat, looked, and recovered, measuring his experience. It was heart lifting, in what looked to be defeat, he was not defeated, only disappointed—knowing he will try again. I could only smile. This kid had a rare kind of victory.” —Kevin Short...Category
