Brazilian Wood Three-Seater Sofa by Rino Levi, Brazil 1950s
By Rino Levi
Located in Utrecht, NL
Rino Levi was one of the pioneers of the modern movement in Brazil, advocating for simple, practical and economical design, disparaging the imitation of classicism. ‘Classical spirit’ rather than classical forms was his ideal. Levi was instrumental in spreading the fame of Brazilian modernism through his furniture designs as well. As this beautiful Brazilian wood sofa shows, by the 1960s, Levi abandoned Italian rationalism in favour of an approach closer to that of the Rio modernists both in his architectural and furniture designs. As a piece of true Brazilian mid-century design, the beauty of the wood and organic shapes and lines dominate this three-seater sofa. The tilted, architectural lines of wood making up the armrests create a visually distinct and exciting appearance. The additional horizontal lines connecting to the backrest are a creative addition, while also supporting the overall stability. The frame with its joinery praises Rino Levi’s craftsmanship and architectural expertise. The beautiful colour of the wood is highlighted by the light upholstery of the body in a premium bouclé fabric, including the three removable cushions. This sofa model is rare to find, for as during Brazil's military dictatorship, it was against the law to export furniture. The ban on exports only ended in the 1980s, but it still took some time for things to change, not to mention that handmade pieces were created in limited editions. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that this sofa is special, and a real rarity. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some scratches and marks on the wood. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 86.41 in W x 28.74 in D x 30.31 in H; Seat height 16.14 in 219.5 cm W x 73 cm D x 77 cm H; Seat height 41 cm About the Designer: Rino Levi was a Brazilian architect important to the development of modernism in Brazil. Levi was born to Italian Jewish parents on December 31, 1901 in São Paulo, Brazil. After graduating from Colégio Dante Alighieri in São Paulo, Levi studied in Milan and Rome under Marcello Piacentini. In 1924, he moved to the School of Architecture of Rome. There, he met Adalberto...

Pair of “Lufthavns Stole” Chairs by Ditte Heath and Adrian Heath, Denmark, 1969
By Ditte & Adrian Heath
Located in Utrecht, NL
This pair of armchairs from the “Series 186” is also known as the “Lufthavns-stole” (Airport chairs). The model was designed in 1969 for Cado Collection. The aluminium frame is without a doubt the most dominant feature of these chairs. The sturdy frame is injection-moulded and polished to resist tear and wear. The overall look, with the exposed bolts and material recalls the modern industrial style. This is softened by the padded seats and backs that are upholstered in black leather, completing the elegant, modern look. Functionality was evidently in the focus when designing the “186” series, which comprises of seven different parts that can be used in different combinations. The variety of modules enables them to fit into any space. These “Airport Chairs” are often claimed to be made by France & Son, however, in 1966 the company was sold to Poul Cadovius, thereafter known as Cado. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Reupholstered with black leather. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Dimensions: 25.39 in W x 30.90 in D x 29.72 in H; Seat Height 15.35 in 64,5 cm W x 78,5 cm D x 75,5 cm H ; Seat height 39 cm About the designer: Adrian Heath (1923-) is an architect who studied at The School of Architecture in London (1951) and was subsequently employed by Hvidt & Molgaard. Ivory “Camaleonda” Modular Sofa in 4 Segments by Mario Bellini, Italy 1971
By Mario Bellini, B&B Italia
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Camaleonda” (Italian word play combining the words ‘chameleon’ and ‘wave’) sofa is Mario Bellini’s contemporary classic. The playful, modular design offers endless options for the user, which also inspired the model’s name. Camaleonda has passed through 5 decades of design history as a true icon. The modules of the sofa defined the aesthetics of an entire era of interior design, and are constantly featured in most international design. The elements that have made this sofa a contemporary classic are the individual modules, their original cutting patterns and the polyurethane padding that forms the characteristic capitonné (a style of upholstery in which the material is drawn in at intervals) design. The four separate segments of this “Camaleonda” were manufactured with the innovative system of cables, hooks and rings created by Bellini in 1970, which defines the characteristic look and modularity. The fundamental characteristic of Camaleonda is its unlimited modularity, a geometric pattern that allows each element to become an enormous pixel through which to define your home environment. The four modules’ versatility and the attached tie-rods and rings make it possible to create custom forms. Furthermore, the modules can be unhooked and recombined at will, allowing the sofa to adapt to an evolving taste and needs. A concept which is dear to Mario Bellini: “Of all the objects I have designed, Camaleonda is perhaps the best in terms of its sense of freedom. There are infinite numbers of possible configurations.” Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The four modules have been reupholstered recently in premium bouclé fabric. Dimensions: Big segment: 37.40 in W x 37.40 in D x 27.55 in H (with back) 95 cm W x 95 cm D x 70 cm H (with back) Small segment: 25.59 in W x 37.40 in D x 27.55 in H (with back) 65 cm W x 95 cm D x 70 cm H (with back) Literature: Domus n. 523, giugno 1973, pubblicità; G. Gramigna, Repertorio del design italiano 1950 - 1980, Milano 1985, p. 341. About the designer: Mario Bellini (born February 1, 1935, Milan) is an internationally renowned Italian architect and designer. He received the Golden Compass Award eight times and the Medaglia d’Oro, that was conferred on him by the President of the Italian Republic. The MoMA in New York already dedicated a personal retrospective exhibition to him in 1987. At the time the museum already included 25 of his works in its permanent collection, including a remarkable set of Olivetti machines as well as the furniture for B&B and Cassina. He graduated from the Milan Polytechnic - Faculty of Architecture in 1959 and began working as an architect himself in the early 1960s. Like many other Italian architects, his activities range from architecture and urban planning to product and furniture design. His career as a product and furniture designer began in 1963, and from 1963 to 1991 he was chief design consultant for Olivetti. For many years he designed furnishing products and systems for B&B Italia and Cassina, TV sets for Brionvega, and hi-fi systems, headphones and electric organs...

Set of Four Göran Malmvall "501" Dining Chairs for Karl Andersson & Söner, 1950s
By Goran Malmvall
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Svensk Fur” furniture line produced by Göran Malmvall and manufactured by Karl Andersson & Söner is a nod to modernist design with traditional Swedish craftsmanship. The design of these chairs relays an insight about the society and culture in which it was produced: closeness to nature, the appreciation of a clutter-free environment and the value of quality handiwork. Göran Malmvall’s Swedish pine designs often get compared to the designs of Axel Einar Hjorth, even though its pieces are exceptional designs on their own merit. Self-taught, Göran Malmvall was a highly skilled cabinetmaker with considerable technical expertise, and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. This set of dining chairs holds a strong expression with its sturdy shaped, organic design, which is dominated by the natural beauty of the material. The backrests are formed by straight lines that slightly curve near the edges. This curvature is followed by the seats that are carved ergonomically, creating visual interest. The joinery is visible throughout the chairs, and features both bolts and seamless wooden joinery which is always a sign of quality craftsmanship. The wide backrests showcase the solid pinewood’s beautiful pattern, reinforcing the rustic feel of the design along with the conical legs that are gently tapered and tilted to support stability. The simple design of these chairs is in line with the Swedish ideals of functional furniture. However, it also portrays a sense of tranquillity that is unique to Scandinavia. This set is sure to bring this sense to any space while providing stability, sitting comfort, and natural beauty via the Swedish pine. Condition: In vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Items have scratches and marks on the wood. Dimensions: 16.14 in W x 17.32 in D x 31.88 in H; Seat height 17.71 in 41 cm W x 44 cm D x 81 cm H; Seat height 45 cm About the Designer: Göran Malmvall (1917–2001) was the youngest son of the manufacturing company’s founder, Karl Andersson. He studied furniture design under Carl Malmsten and was involved with the family business from an early age until 1982, mainly in the capacity of an in-house furniture designer. Self-taught, he was a highly skilled cabinet-maker with considerable technical expertise, and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. His most notable designs include Svensk Fur, Svitjod and, not least, the KA 72 cabinet...

Traditional Carved Norwegian Kubbestol, Norway 1800s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This “kubbstol” or “kubbestol” is a traditional Scandinavian chair made from a log. The kubbestol was quite common in some districts of Norway from about 1750 to 1960, where it was usually made from logs with significant girth and three to four feet in length. The tree trunk was hollowed out so that the base (from the seat down) would be cylindrical while the back of the chair continues upward from the seat in a curved shield that makes the chair both snug and comfortable. Most, but not all, kubbestols were decorated with carving, painting, or some combination of the two. This chair has beautiful folk patterns hand carved into it, with visible, raw craftsmanship. Carved and painted decorations would differ from district to district and styles changed over time. While the log is seemingly roughly shaped, this chair is surprisingly comfortable, as functionality has been historically important for Scandinavian furniture makers. The kubbestol was often placed next to the open-hearth fireplace or next to the bed, and it was reserved for the head of the household. Large, impressive farmhouses might have had several richly carved and painted kubbestols as a display of wealth and status. These days the log chair has become a symbol of Scandinavian roots for many families with ties to Norway, Sweden, or Denmark. The kubbestol is a reminder of our rural heritage and a time when most things in and around the home were made by hand from materials found in nature. Essentially a chair hewn from a tree trunk, this chair is as closely associated with Norway as Peer Gynt...

Alfred Christensen Three-Seater Sofa for Slagelse Møbelfabrik, Denmark 1940s
By Alfred Christensen
Located in Utrecht, NL
Danish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen known as cabinetmakers. Alfred Christensen’s present sofa in this style is a rare and exquisite example of this. This sofa has the characteristic ‘open armrest’ design that showcases the high level craftsmanship and the beautiful walnut structure as well. Clean and pure lines define this model that are coupled with expert craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body, adapting design to modern-day needs. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, Christensen maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. In consequence, this three-seater sofa has an elegant but still warm look thanks to its rounded edges and open execution. The only form of ornamentation - apart from the bent armrests - is the button tufting on the back. The light colour of the textural upholstery in combination with the dark walnut legs create an aesthetic that is perfect to bring a modern touch to any space. While Danish designers, including Alfred Christensen, had many principles, above all, all designers...

This intention is clearly traceable in Ottelin’s drawings, where the back was drawn as hands embracing the users. A loveseat derives its name from holding two people close to one another. First invented in the 17th century, this two-person chair was originally intended for women wearing large dresses with hoops to sit comfortably. In the Nordic countries, loveseats, such as this model, were typically made of quality woods with fully upholstered bodies to enhance the cosiness. This rare “Duetto” is unquestionably Ottelin’s most distinctive sofa model. This is primarily due to the peculiar back that has a heart shape and envelopes towards the front to form the arms as well. At the top, the edge curves outward creating a welcoming and open look. The homely curviness and precision clearly show the influence of Werner West, Ottelin’s teacher. The body, upholstered in honey-coloured sheepskin, is paired with tapered, lacquered wood legs. This combination is a true Nordic characteristic, keeping the tradition of using organic materials at its core. As this “Duetto” sofa shows, the shapes and forms of Nordic minimalism of the mid-century are infinitely interesting. Additionally, the stylish look is always paired with the highest quality craftsmanship, here provided by the Finnish furniture company, Kervo Snickerifabrik, Oy Stockmann. The Kerava cabinetmaking company was founded on February 1, 1862 and Ottelin served as director of the company's furniture department from 1953 to 1954 and as artistic director of interior design from 1955 until his death in 1971. Ottelin began his studies at the Central School of Art and Design in 1939, but had to suspend his studies for 1941–1944 due to conscription. He graduated as an interior designer in 1946 and started at Stockmann's drawing office in 1948. He served as director of the company's furniture department from 1953 to 1954 and as artistic director of interior design from 1955 until his death in 1971. Ottelin's best-known products are modern wooden chairs, but he also designed cabinet and shelving systems and extensive interior design for a variety of properties. In 1952, Olof Ottelin designed the furniture for the Swedish School of Economics in Helsinki together with Lisa Johansson-Pape (lamps), Yki Nummi (coloring) and Dora Jung...

Adolf Relling & Frederik Kayser "Kaminstolen" for Arnestad Bruk, Norway, 1940s
By Fredrik A. Kayser, Adolf Relling
Located in Utrecht, NL
Designed in 1946 by Norwegian designers, Adolf Relling & Frederik Kayser, these so called “Kaminstolen” are a distinct pair thanks to their peculiar frame. The name can be roughly translated as “fireplace or stove chair”. Besides the unique look, these chairs’ manufacturer is also noteworthy as many of the Norwegian classic furniture pieces from the 1950s and 60s first saw the light of day at the furniture factory Arnestad bruk in Vollen. The fireplace chair as an expression refers to all kinds of chairs placed in front of fireplaces, connected by a single shared characteristic: their comfort. Here, comfort refers to both the ergonomic and visual aspect. Fireplace chairs usually come in pairs and feature an upholstered body designed for relaxing. The wooden frames are very precisely crafted, showcasing the exciting angles and forms predominantly on the arms. At the same time, while there are numerous sharp angles and corners, the chairs still exude a cosy and welcoming appearance which is a result of the smoothed edges of the arms and legs. Both Relling and Kayser were of great importance for the functionalist furniture...
