Pair of Guillerme et Chambron "Edouard" Armchairs for Votre Maison, France 1960s
By Votre Maison, Guillerme et Chambron
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Edouard” lounge chair is often described as a “caquetoire”, or a conversation chair. This type of seating was an armchair style which emerged during the European Renaissance in France.
As the name suggests, this type of chair was meant for sitting for elongated periods to chat. Generally, these chairs were also highly regarded for their aesthetic value as well, which can also be said about these exceptional chair models. The “Edouard” is a sculptural model with a blonde oak frame that is characteristic of the French designer duo. The design showcases the wide variety of shapes and forms of the solid oak frames, from the curving lines to the straighter spindles comprising the backrests. Naturally, a conversation chair needs to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, therefore the backs are slightly tilted, and the seat raised, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The fuchsia-coloured upholstery beautifully complements the wood tone, and the small textured loops of fabric highlight the smoothness of the frames’ surface. The French caquetoire chairs...

Rauni Peippo "Apila" Stool for Stockmann Orno, Finland 1960s
By Orno Stockmann
Located in Utrecht, NL
This famous pine stool by Finnish interior designer Rauni Peippo is the most famous model from the ‘Apila’ set, that contains a table and bar stools as well. It is one of those models that is immediately recognizable thanks to its shape.
Finnish design is appreciated around the world for its minimalistic appearance, playful forms and strict functionalism. After Finland became independent, a dialogue with nature was to become the prime force in the ongoing evolution of Finnish design. This relationship with nature was much in evidence in 20th century Finnish design, which actively expanded on the metaphors and motifs therein. This progression is evident in this iconic stool. “Apila” means “clover” in Finnish, which comes as no surprise; the four leaf clover-shaped seat is carved from pine wood, enhancing the already organic impression of this model. It is infinitely stylish, with sleek tapered legs that counterbalance the round, soft edges of the body. The design dates to the mid-century and the first manufacturer was Stockmann Orno, a manufacturer with a history that dates back to 1862. (It is still the largest department store in the Nordic countries.)
This stool was previously misattributed to fellow Finnish designer, Lisa Johansson-Pape, but is now well-documented. Thanks to its sturdy construction and undeniable style, this ‘Apila’ stool...

The construction of these slipper chairs...

"Orion" Sofa by Folke Jansson for SM Wincrantz, Sweden 1950s
By SM Wincrantz 1, Folke Jansson
Located in Utrecht, NL
Sweden contributed to the progression of form and function in its own way, based on long-standing traditions, natural resources, and the critical - yet often coincidental - availability of creative genius. Folke Jansson was certainly one of the latter, designing unique forms with an artistic touch.
Jansson is a designer who is difficult to define, being the creator of daily objects which are far from the organic forms of Alvar Aalto, and yet not aiming for the minimalism of Arne Jacobsen or Poul Kjaerholm. His experimentation has led him to play both with the free forms embedded into materials, and with the geometric shapes superimposed on them. This ‘Orion’ sofa...
